I didn't see anything on this forum about this, so I thought it would be helpful for people to hear about a hard drive you can connect to the PSP. I read about the Apacer Share Steno CD311 on the Playstation forum and now after buying one for myself, I can tell you it's great. I brought about 15 movies and all the Critic episodes with me on a long trip. It was very easy to connect the Steno to the PSP, delete the videos I just watched and then copy new videos to the memory stick on the PSP.

I got mine for $149 at supermediastore.com, which is just a little more than a 1 GB Duo, but it holds almost 40 Duos worth of videos. And you don't have to super-compress your videos to awful quality to get them all to fit on your Duo.

The Steno mounts the PSP memory stick so you can browse the memory stick's files on the Steno. It has a very tiny display and a crude, but useable interface to delete and copy files back and forth between the Steno's hard drive and the PSP.

Enjoy!

I used to think I wanted to be able play videos directly off an external hard drive, but now I'm sure I prefer to just copy the video file to the memory stick and then put the hard drive away. I wouldn't want to have to hold both the PSP and the hard drive on my lap (while I'm on the plane) and I wouldn't want the constant drain on the hard drive's battery. The only disadvantage to this solution is that you have to buy one large Duo. I got a 1 GB Duo so I can watch high quality videos, but it would be a small compromise to go with a 512 MB Duo.

seems illogical as to why they didnt eliminate the use for a memory stick. It should have just been manufactured as a hd with the usb connection, capable of feeding the psp directly.

Phredds got a point as well, access times and a constantly spinning disk on a hd would kill battery life....unless you have a psp hd and a huge battery, but who wants to hold all that? Unless a IR mode is possible, where you can keep the hd and battery in your bag and just view the files on your psp through a IR file access interface

Does the stenos drive transfer files to the memory card at usb 2.0 speeds ? I read that the usb OTG on the h3200 is only usb 1.1. So If this does it at 2.0 thats alot faster and cheaper way to go. And Phredd you mentioned the ipod for more storage using the stenos. Do you think it would work on other mp3 players as well ? I have a creative zen micro that would be a extra 5 gigs.

I see your point about the interface feature on the apacer Phredd, now that I think about it the ability to navigate the directory structure using the lcd is a huge plus for using that unit in particular with the psp as opposed to the other ones that I found with OTG.

It feels too slow to be USB 2.0, but I could be wrong. I would imagine that it would work with any MP3 player with USB. So, if the 40 GB isn't enough, you can store a bit on your MP3 player. As for the H320, that might already do what the Steno does. I've already got an iPod, which I need for my car stereo, so the H320 at $350 (?) wasn't a consideration. And if (when) the iPod can connect to the PSP, I won't need the Steno.

So i just recieved my CD211 Share Stenos HD enclosure, and I now have and 80gig drive that can feed the psp without a computer. It's pretty sweet, although it feels slow to transfer. No I'll have something to watch on the plane to London. For $90 canadian, I'm pretty happy.

Can anyone find the enclosure without the hard drive in stock? Newegg and ChiefValue are both OOS.

Well all I have is a 256 pro duo. I transfered a file that is 192MB in about 3mins. When I copy from computer to PSP it takes about 3mins as well.

I bought it online from here:

Has anyone been able to find the Share Steno CD211 in the WHITE COLOR?
When I did a Google search for "AP-SS1200W1" I only found one website that has it in stock... ..in Taiwan.
I couldn't understand the language on the website, so I couldn't order it.

Jin,

It depends where you buy it. Someone posted a link earlier in the thread for a $149 cd311 that includes the hard drive. Or, you can find it for around $50 without the hard drive and you add one.
