I didn't see anything on this forum about this, so I thought it would be helpful for people to hear about a hard drive you can connect to the PSP. I read about the Apacer Share Steno CD311 on the Playstation forum and now after buying one for myself, I can tell you it's great. I brought about 15 movies and all the Critic episodes with me on a long trip. It was very easy to connect the Steno to the PSP, delete the videos I just watched and then copy new videos to the memory stick on the PSP.

I got mine for $149 at supermediastore.com, which is just a little more than a 1 GB Duo, but it holds almost 40 Duos worth of videos. And you don't have to super-compress your videos to awful quality to get them all to fit on your Duo.

The Steno mounts the PSP memory stick so you can browse the memory stick's files on the Steno. It has a very tiny display and a crude, but useable interface to delete and copy files back and forth between the Steno's hard drive and the PSP.

Enjoy!

I check the page out and that looks awesome. The only downside is it's just another this i would need to carry around. Great idea if your going on long trips, plane rides or vacation but for the casual user it's not practical. If i go somewhere at most my 1-2 movies will suffice until i get back home to load new movies on my psp

Hey crazy, I'm absoluitely serious. The PSP thinks it's connected to a computer and the Steno is kind of like a one-trick computer. Vermillion, I agree, if you're only watching videos on a short commute, 1-2 Duos might be more practical.

It has a built-in rechargeable battery. That kind of bugs me, but it did last a full 12 hour travel day.

I did find it at other dealers. Some were hard to reach by phone so I was skeptical, but they're probably okay, too. I ordered from Supermedia on Saturday, it shipped on Monday and was delivered on Wednesday (2nd day air for $12.95).

How is it differnt from CD 211 version?

also is there a hard drive in it that you can take out and give me some info on that?

It is USB - connects to the USB port of the PSP just as a computer would. I'm pretty sure you can take the hard drive out and upgrade it. I don't know how it differs from the CD211, except that it's $10 more.

I would guess this works because of the new "On the Go" USB standard:
(OTG overview)

I would think that any other 2.5 external enclosure with a chipset that features OTG should operate like the Apacer unit when you add your own notebook hard drive. The apacer does have that very useful lcd display and integrated battery, there are some other enclosures that i've found that have OTG too:

(no lithium ion battery, but this one has a AA battery pack)

(the apacer unit minus the hard drive)

(built in battery)

I think I might try this out, seems very cool and I happen to have a 30gb 2.5 drive from an old laptop to use.

How long does it take to copy a movie from the hard drive to duo?

Nice

I just bought an 80Gig drive a week ago for my Lacie HD encloeure. This is a better use for all that space! Now I just need to encode all my movies (sigh). I wish someone would make a movie bittorrent site for PSP format movies.

I should have the case by tuesday, I'll let you know how it all turns out!

It seems like it takes about a minute or two to copy a large (600-700 MB) file. I think you could probably connect this to an iPod, and use the iPod for extra storage, but you can't connect the iPod directly to the PSP...yet.

dtech, the other hard drives might mount the PSP and could be used to copy from the PSP to the hard drive, but without an interface to choose a destination folder on the PSP, they wouldn't be useful for storing videos to watch on the PSP.

So you can store dvd movies on this hard drive and play them directly to ur psp or?

I'm assuming the answer is no for playing it directly off the Hard Drive. You still need a big enough memory stick duo to hold a high quality movie (let's say a 512) for you to be able to easily swap it between the hard drive and the PSP. The PSP's interface still only directly interacts through the memory card before an external device.
