I hope you're right about the upgrades.. The 'Real' player is probably fantasy...considering it's Sony.

Hey, 3.80 is great.

I even found a BBC World Service feed on the ShoutCast player.

I just wish they'd tell you what each radio preset is before you have to press it. The whole UI is just a wee bit weird.

yeah but i havent been able to try that feature out....im in iraq and theres no woreless out here....but WTF is that new visualiser about? it looks like a brown etch a sketch on crack......wish theyd have something like the windows media version or even better the itunes vis....that would be sweet!

It's all explained in reasonable detail on the same Sony website where you get the update.

But basically:
1) Install 3.80 in the usual manner and taking all the normal precautions
2) Then get in range of a WiFi hotspot (if not already)
3) Under Network you'll find the new Internet Radio icon
4) Under Internet Radio you'll find About Internet Radio
5) Click on it and follow the instructions to download the two Players
6) Start with Player 1 (powered by Shoutcast)
7) The Players are sort-of like crippled webpages, some browser functions disabled, but works the same
8) Scroll waaaay down and click on ? to read the lengthy instructions
9) Once you're tired of the funny tuning, squeal, static hiss and Morse code effects, turn them off

The only thing I haven't figured out is how to do is find a certain station (like BBC) without poking at the unlabled buttons. It seems like they figure random stations are good enough. It'd be nice if you could save some stations in memory and access them directly.

I guess there's hope that more radio players will be released with better features.

If it ever gets to the point where you can easily get to the exact Internet Radio station that you want, then it'll be basically perfect. The PSP is nice because it turns on so quickly. You can go from off to listening to Internet Radio in about a minute.

Another thing to consider is that mobile WiFi is now possible. By linking a cell-phone type 3G data modem with a mobile WiFi router (combined with a data plan that is actually affordable by humans), then add in the PSP with perhaps an FM modulator, you can have Internet Radio in your car (at least anywhere that the 3G service is available). Such mobile Internet Radio will eventually be another dent in the AM/FM broadcast industry.

I've already done laptop based mobile Internet Radio, but I have not yet done the PSP version.
