Summary: It's not Wipeout by a long shot

Wow... I love the look of this game, and was a huge fan of Wipeout 2097/XL, but this was the biggest letdown of the series yet, beating WO3. Instead of tight fast racing, you try to slowly maneuver a drifty hovercraft through ridiculously twisty overdesigned tracks while listening to generic wallpaper techno. The only way to move quickly is to constantly hit the tiny speed arrows, but they usually only last a split second until you have to slam on the brakes for another 180... or they fire you straight into a wall or into a bottomless pit.

It's very obvious that Psygnosis is no longer making the series -- Studio Liverpool did clearly "study the classic Wipeout games" since graphically it's perfect. It looks just like you'd expect if Wipeout 3 never happened, and the series ran straight onto next-gen consoles. On the bright side, it's also not all about eliminating your opponents or balancing boost and shield reserves anymore, and you can absorb any item to boost shields - very handy.

Not that this game doesn't have its selling points, but it's way more Marble Madness than Wipeout. It doesn't even feel like a racing game; it's just an absurd puzzle to cope with the anti-speed tracks. If you want the PSP game with the most "Wipeout XL" feel to it, I kid you not, get Ridge Racer. It's fast, fun, full of cars and tracks, and packed with great design. Wipeout Pure could be a great game, but it's not Wipeout by a long shot.

I didn't choose to rate it 81, but there was no option to submit a score, and no way to retract it. I'd give it a 50 on the grounds that it's not entirely unplayable.
