This is an extremely useful little accessory. It's extremely simple too. Plug it into your headphone jack, and turn it on by selecting a radio signal thats not locally used and is programmed into the feeder (88.7, etc: theres 8 stations in all). Then, using ANY nearby radio, tune in and it will pickup whatever is on your PSP.
This is a great way to setup your PSP to any stereo system, car, etc. I've used it to watch movies in the car, play my MP3s in the car, etc. It's extremely useful and very easy to use.

these are crap in any city. you can never get a reliable signal

Works fine where I am. I commute through a few cities and the same channel works fine in them all. I guess it depends where you live. Have you tried the different channels?
It's also pretty neat for home. I hook my PSP games up through my stereo for a nice surround sound experience.

Alas that this is illegal for use in the UK due to tougher broadcasting laws.

Are you sure about that? Maybe the law applies to short-range radio broadcasts, but these transmitters only send out a strong enough signal to reach antennae 10 feet away. A law that restricts such broadcasting (if you can even call it that) seems kind of rediculous...
Or I just have my facts mixed up.

is the signal always strong (if in a 10 foot radius), like without cutting off or does it cut off here and there snake?
+
In a car it might cut in and out a little bit, but if you're not moving it is pretty clear.
+
even if the car's attenna is mounted on teh windshield?
