Summary: Challenging, but rewarding

I've had this game for 4 days and I've already reached HSG Rank: King and Tournament Stage: Grand. I've never played a golf videogame before, but this game is easy to pick up.

Some people think this game is difficult, and some think it is easy. The trick to this game is timing. Hitting the ball is done by 3 button presses, 1) to start the power meter, 2) to set the power of the shot, and 3) to set the impact. That sounds simple, but this game is surprisingly deep. You have to take into account factors such as wind direction, wind speed, the type of terrain you’re on, the power range of your shot, and the slope of the terrain you’re on. Spin is achieved by pressing and holding down different arrow buttons while you are setting shot power and impact. Vertical spin affects the trajectory. Superspin is achieved by hitting a spin shot at full power and getting Perfect Impact (hitting it exactly in the middle of your impact zone). Once you unlock triangle button and circle button shots, you can use them to compensate for when you miscalculate your power (triangle and circle to increase and decrease your power, respectively). It sounds like a lot to remember, but you’ll soon get the hang of it.

On the first course, South Alps, I've never lost in Challenge Mode and I've gotten Super Win every time in Match Play (except the first time, I got a Narrow Win). However, as you unlock new courses, they quickly increase in difficulty, with lakes, trees, and buildings getting in your way. The green becomes unpredictably sloped and sandpit shots become more frequent.

If you think this game is difficult, you should try using items that increase the Impact, which makes it more forgiving if you miss the impact zone. If you really suck, you can change your Shot Mode to Auto, so it automatically sets the impact for you. If you continue to lose frequently, then Easy Mode will be unlocked in Options. The key to getting better is to practice in Training.

Unlocking items will increase your stats, and new characters generally have better stats but are harder to use. Some people have already complained about the lack of multiplayer with a single PSP and I agree with them. I only have one friend with this game, and he sucks.

The graphics of this game are flawless. The camera never gets in your way, although sometimes trees and bushes disappear if your ball is in them. Loading times are very short and are only noticeable in the character selection screen.

Unlike previous Hot Shots games, the characters in HSG: Open Tee have not been Americanized, so they retain their Japanese chibi anime style. This may or may not appeal to people and may be the ultimate deciding factor. For me, this game is perfect. This has become my favorite PSP game and has great replayability value.
