Anyone who has attended E3 even once knows that at the end of each day, there is a desperate dash to find a place to sit and rest. This could be the floor, a table, a set of stairs, or anything else you can rest your rump on. However, the gaming booth is always preferred, whether or not you are at a "good" game. Such was the story for me when I stumbled upon this gem. I started playing this game quite half-heartedly, with the same opinion that most of you have posted in your comments. To my absolute amazement, I couldn't put this game down!
Pac-Man World 3 caught me quite off guard. The first thing I thought when I saw the title was, "Where was Pac-Man World 1 and 2?" After a bit of research, I only found the first sequel, and it got decent reviews. I have never been someone to particularly enjoy re-makes of old games. Generally, a classic remake is either extremely well done, or extremely crappy. Usually they swing more towards the latter side. This game was an exception.
You start off playing as the beloved Pac-Man in the third person. The goal of each level is to collect all the yellow pellets that are scattered throughout. Simple. Pac-Man has several normal moves that can help him achieve this goal. A charging roll, double jump, fisticuffs, and the charge-up ground pound. Throughout the game, you will receive power moves. One of these which I found especially clever is a an energy stream that follows you as you walk. When you make a complete circle with the stream, it destroys any enemies inside. Reminded me of the classic Tron game. =) As an added bonus, you can collect fruit that will charge these moves to make them even more powerful.
I encountered a few different enemies in this game; the most fun, of course, being the ghosts. As with the classic Pac-Man game, you cannot touch a ghost until you eat a "power pellet." When this happens, the ghosts turn blue, and start running away. Seeing their little eyes floating around in 3-D after you eat them is hilarious. Some of the other baddies were pretty generic, but were still fun to play against.
By far the highlight of the game for me was when I played as Clyde the ghost. At one point I found a tread-mill like machine. When Pac-Man ran on it, he opened up a portal (pretty cool effect) and Clyde popped out. He is a simple character, with only a couple moves, but the idea of playing as someone other than Pac-Man was fresh and fun. His primary move is a "scary" houl that destroys enemies. If you power this up, he opens his mouth to a monstrous size and releases a super howl that devastates enemies, boxes, in-laws, etc. Definitly a nice touch for this game. There is also another playable character named "Pinky," but I either missed it, or it wasn't in this demo.
The graphics in this game were bright, colorful and clear. It looked great on the PSP, and was very easy to play using the PSP's controls. The visuals were definitly up to par for the PSP, and I doubt anyone will have any complaints. The sounds were fun, consisting mainly of remade sound effects from the original game. It was almost a delight to die just to hear the classic game over music.
There were three playable levels at E3; a factory, a heaven-like place, and rolling hills, set with windmills and all. Each one provided for a fresh new experience. Sure the same basic game concept is there: "eat pellets, eat super pellet, eat ghosts, repeat." Nonetheless, this game really raised the bar not just for classic remakes, but for platforming adventure games in general. I do not know if there will be a multiplayer mode available, but if there is, this will turn out to be one well-rounded game upon launch.
This game was fun. Just because it didn't use mind-blowing graphics and crazy new concepts doesn't make it a bad game! I say give it a shot, even if it is just a rental. I was stuck in this booth for almost 2 hours playing Pac-Man at an event where Xbox360, PS3, and the new Zelda were being shown! That has to amount to something!
Always nice to see someone dissing a game before they've even had chance to play it, very sensible :-(
I managed to play this game for a while at e3 and I though it was great. Excellent graphics, cool gameplay and the controls felt just right. Its basically the same as the PS2 version, which is also pretty good. There was hardly any PSP games at e3 and this one really stood out as being solid and great fun.
Thanks, Vauncey. Good to see some support from another person who actually played the game. Seriously guys, you can't knock it till you try it! I remember when Mario64 was announced. I can't even count all the people that said the same thing as many of you; "OMG Mario shouldn't be made in 3-D!" There is no such thing as a game that "shouldn't be done." I personally believe that almost anything can be made into a good game, it just has to be DONE WELL.
Sry i was 7 when mario went 3D but ive play ans seen pac man games in 3D and why would u wana play it like that!
And as i was saying b4 this game will b left in the dark when it comes out by time comes out...
