Wipeout Pure is a futuristic, strap-your-carcass-in-rip-your-skin -off hovercraft racing game. Ever played Wipeout on the PS1? Ever wanted it in to-go size but still streaking by so fast that it makes you hurl your early morning coffee right in your co-worker’s lap? Then praise Sony your prayers have not gone unheard! Strap yourselves in and get ready for some 300-mph kick to your nads.
Graphics
The PSP has already impressed me with some stunning visuals in other games, but this is by far the best I’ve played especially the effects, unlike Twisted Metal. The explosions, jet-streams, and special pick-up attacks are render gorgeously on the PSP. This game truly shows off what every PSP game should look like. The futuristic-technological environment reminded me of Tron for some reason. Anyway, they are also equally interesting, but you don’t really have enough time to appreciate or even notice that these backgrounds even exist. The sense of speed is godly, it made me feel like I was really controlling the AG and it only served to increase my adrenaline flow by a tenfold, I was not disappointed. Perfect Score, hands down. 10/10
Sound
What would a jet sound like if you flew three feet above the ground? Probably like the AGS, only they’ll sound better and won’t split your head in half. The sound design was extremely dynamic. From the boost-pad to the missiles, or even the earthquake attack sounded as if I was actually inside that steel coffin speeding to my death at only waiting to hear the missile drill be into the wall. The music was entertaining at first with such a variety that it almost blew my mind, almost. After a few hours of playing this title I decided to turn the crappiness to 0%. But, overall the audio was nice. 8.5/10
Gameplay
Hold X, hit boost, air-brake, repeat. Repetitions never played so good and neither did any racer I’ve ever played. Along with the simple scheme that plays like the classic the weapons feel right, too. Even though you’ll curse that they were in there, but at least it doesn’t take the game down even a bit. The difficulty can be a bit rough when I reached the flash level tracks I was introduced to Mr. Wipeout’s bottomless can of ownage. The AI, unfortunately, can out do you anytime it pleases and races in straight lines like robots making even the 7th place pilot hard to pass. Even so, this game has some serious addictive qualities and zone mode was just what I’d been looking for in a racer and the multi player, whoo! Oh, the browser hack does account for something here. I doubt Rivals or DUB have any chance against this great title. 10/10
don't know how to apply airbrake? shouler buttons, either L for left airbrake or R for right, or go into settings and have R act as both. To do the boost, accelerate when the announcer says GO (has to be timed correctly), and the in race boost is either right left right or left right left on the Dpad when you are in the air.. you'll do a barrelroll and when you land you'll get a significant boost in speed. It also takes away about an 1/8th of your shields away so don't do it too often if you can'tregenerate your shields
I really dig wipeout pure even though I bought the game just for the browser. Does anyone else use the sideshift button? If you choose the different control configuration from the default you get an xtra button called sideshift. I find it comes in handy to set up for sharp turns especially for the Tigron ship from the gamma pack 1 download. Try sideshifting to the oppisite direction of the next turn before you airbrake and your ship will turn on a tighter axis. Sideshifting can also mess you up if you use it at the wrong time. I agree that this is my favorite racing game ever**
10 out of 10!
if you have a ps2 (or ps1) you should really try picking up the previous games, except maybe wipeout fusion (which was made by studio liverpool before they realized that what they had made wasn't a wipeout game, they FIXED everything in the development of wipeout PURE and it feels more like the originals.
The originals had a lot of concept design from 'the designers republic', which back then really MADE wipeout what it was, the look and feel of the game was just very pleasing. Wipeout 3 had to have been my favorite and still sort of is, pure is tied or a close 2nd. One of the main things that SL did that made wipeout even better was ZONE mode.. which wasn't in any of the previous installments except the first one SL made, which was fusion. Fusion feels wierd, it's hard to describe
- You can't leave the track
1.previous ones and pure you have no binding to the track (fly off the edge), which I find to be a good thing.
- There are Presure sensitive weapons (pulse cannon)
1.this replaced a lot of good weapons and how they functioned, there were only 2 Pressure weapons in fusion I think, and they basically were useless.
- Ship Physics were seriously messed up in Fusion
1. killed the reason to call it wipeout.
- Had a lot of tracks, but introduced these extremely stupid DRIVER avatars that were just horrible. horrible horrible. stupid looking, detached you from being the driver, couldn't do any sort of stat customizing with them, they were basically there for show, and what a horrible idea that was.
- the only thing going for wipeout fusion, was that you could change the music in game. (push select and a little HUD thing popped out and you could select which track to play), which should have been in this one. To me, there was only 2 good songs in fusion, and from previous installments of the series, the music was as important to the game itself as the ships were.
- Fusion killed off a lot of the racing teams. I won't bother listing which ones, because they will most likely show back up as downloads (don't wanna ruin it for you).
If any of you are interested, you can easily purchase any of the wipeout series (including FUSION), for under $5.99 in the US at most stores that have used games, believe me, you won't find a copy new. Fusion would be about $8.99-12.99 at gamestop. same with the others.
I'm one of the people that think the majority of you are out of your mind for picking a stupid PSP browser over 1.8GB of recordable UMD. oh wow, i'm gonna check my mail on a screen that displays 4xx by 280 something or whatever it is.. I forgot.. lol
hehe. who wouldn't want a UMD-r.. but I'll take what I've got a kick'n game and a crippled browser. I bought a PSP specifically for this game. My brother used to work for Psygnosis back in the day and so wipeout and what not falling into my PS1 equiped lap changed how I looked at race games.
Um, what is your point, digi? I don't understand it. You can't even buy a UMD-R. If it was a choice, I'd definitely pick it over som eother options, though. lol
cassie, your point is my point.. I would rather one writeable UMD's and a unit to transfer files to them, than a webbrowser..
I know they wont though, that would basically make the memory stick duo a completely pointless product.
Um, what is your point, digi? I don't understand it. You can't even buy a UMD-R. If it was a choice, I'd definitely pick it over som eother options, though. lol
Meant to also say, "and downloading an official and full featured web browser IS a choice?"
Browser - as far as i'm concerned, doesn't exist
UMD-R - doesn't exist, won't exist.
I'm mainly refering to the poll on the front page, where having a web browser seems to be more important than burning 1.8GB of music/ movies/games onto a UMD.
