Ah, hack 'n slash RPG's. Ever since the original Gauntlet was released in arcades, there has been a dedicated fanbase for hack 'n slash RPG's. One of the most notable ones is Sega's Phantasy Star Online and Sony Online Entertainment's Champions of Norrath. Untold Legends was developed by SOE, so it plays similar to Champions of Norrath for the Playstation 2. Here is my review.
Graphics
Pros: The game has excellent character models and enemy models. The backgrounds are also of very high quality.
Cons: Although the models are nice, they aren't very original designs.
Audio
Pros: The game has very good weapon sounds.
Cons: Sadly, weapon sounds are its only strong point. The music is very mediocre and repetitive, and the character voices (well, their grunts) are annoying. These are the worst quality of the game.
Gameplay
Pros: If you've played Champions of Norrath on the Playstation 2, then you've played Untold Legends. Fortunately, it is very easy to learn the controls, and the hack 'n slash gameplay is always fun.
Cons: It's a little unbalanced. My level 19 character is decimating every foe he comes across with ease. Also, you cannot use the d-pad to move your character, which is a minus in my opinion. Also, it get's a tad repetitive.
Multplayer
Sadly, I haven't been able to try multiplayer yet.
Load Times
The load times aren't insanely long, although they aren't "short" either. Fortunately, each area of the game is rather large, so unless you're warping back and forth between the area and the city of Aven, you shouldn't get annoyed.
Recommended: Yes
This isn't the best hack 'n slash of all time (Phantasy Star Online holds that honor) but it is a very fun game, despite its repetitiveness. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Gauntlet/Norrath style games.
