I received this item in the mail today, and was pretty excited, as I've been looking for a cheap way to amplify the audio on my PSP for the longest time. This amplifier from the Brando Workshop website gave me the perfect solution. For $12, this amplifier made by a company called PEGA is a great deal.
It clamps onto your PSP using the holes on the top of the PSP and the bottom of the PSP. It's a secure fit, but not tight enough to damage any part of your PSP so don't worry about that. This item uses two AAA batteries to power the amplified speakers. A short audio cable on the bottom of the device plugs into the headphone jack and provides the sound.
When in use, the speakers fold up above the PSP and click into place (see item picture). When not in use, the speakers fold back down behind the PSP and out of sight. If you have a PSP case, you will need to remove these speakers to put the PSP back in it. There is a power switch for the amp on the bottom on the device and there is a green LED in between the two speakers so you'll know when it's turned on. Don't forget to shut off the speakers when not in use or you'll drain the AAA batteries pretty quickly.
As for sound quality, this is where the item loses it's value. For $12, I didn't expect much, so when I heard the sound quality of these speakers, I wasn't surprised. The sounds effects in movies and games seemed a bit too loud in comparison to background music. And when it did gets too loud, the sound got really distorted and fuzzy. These sound best when there is just dialogue and no background music. The good thing about using these speakers is that you won't need to struggle to hear your UMD movies and games anymore. These do exactly what the title says, they AMPLIFY the sound. You won't need to use the UMD Volume +'s anymore for sure! Since these plug into the headphone jack, you can use the PSP's sound setting button to go through the different sound settings while these are plugged in.
Overall, these are a good buy if you want a cheap way to make your PSP louder. But if you're looking for sound quality, PASS on these for sure and wait for the better (and more expensive) amplifiers to come out.
surprisingly, when playing music on these speakers, it sounds a lot better than when playing movies. games also sound pretty good. as i stated, these are a great value, and do the job it's intended for.
these speakers clamp onto the PSP directly. so no, they do not fit over, or IN the playgear pocket case.
Seems kind of crappy. I wouldn't want to make my portable even bigger by attaching speakers. You can't use the speakers and use any type of stand or case, so you can lay the PSP on it's back and point the speakers and screen at the celing (sound is directional) or you can try and prop it up against something. Or you can hold it, which works for movies, but is kind of impractical when it comes to music.
I think you'd be better off with ear buds, or if you're trying to share your music, get some nice stand alone speakers that you can position and pack seperately. Who says they have to attach and possibly block the UMD slot?
Given the Amplifier is a pair of flip-up speakers, how do you think it would compare to the NYKO Theatre Experience in terms of loudness and sound quality?
I have the NYKO Theatre Experience on pre-order with Sepharus, which I'm hoping to get in late May. While I'm really looking forward to it for use with converted videos, mp3s, and watching UMD movies, I'm not sure if it'll be useable at all as external speakers during gaming. I'm hoping it is, but something like the amplifier for $12 is a great deal if it doesn't interfere with handheld gaming.
i'm positive the NYKO theatre experience will be way better than these amplifiers. not only does it amplify the sound, it also acts as a psp recharger, stand, AND protective case! i'm not sure how the nyko speakers will sound tho. most likely better than these, since these speakers are pretty cheap. but the nyko does come with a hefty price tag. =P for $12, these are definitely worth a try.
