The PSP Light Magnifier is a simple device used to magnify the PSP screen by a factor 1.6. It is very simply made and the magnifying lens is of a decent quality.
This device is made up of 3 panels, the portion which attaches to your PSP goes beneath the UMD door, the panel which raises the lens and then the lens itself which sits over the PSP screen. Attaching it is actually quite easy, you simply place the bottom panel underneath the PSP and slide it back so that the two plastic hooks go over the silver portion near the barcode, then slide the bottom panel up and two other hooks go into the screw slots on top of the PSP. Once in place you can compact the light magnifier down to a one panel size.
When in use, you simply flip open the lens into position and adjust your viewing angle for the best view. The lens does a noticable job of increasing the scale of the screen. A factor of 1.6 might not sound like a lot, but you do actually notice it. The ability to fold back the lens when not in use makes it very compact and travel-friendly. The design also ensures that when compacted, the lens is kept safe and clean as it is sandwhiched between the other two panels.
Pros aside, there are a few cons that you should be aware of, however. First of all, the lens catches a bit of dust on both bottom and top, but this is to be expected and can be wiped with the same cloth you already use to wipe your PSP screen. Secondly, depending on the angle you view the lens from, you might see a slight bit of warping on the sides. This is caused by the curvature on the right and left side of the lens. It isn't drastic and isn't often noticeable. Another annoyance is that you have to remove the entire magnifier when switching UMD's. This brings us to our final complaint, when removing the magnifier, the two hooks that rest near the barcode on the bottom of the PSP seem to be almost grabbing at the silver seam. Ideally, you should pull the top two hooks out from the screw slots first and then push the magnifier away from the PSP and then down towards you.
Overall, the PSP Light Magnifier is a very simple, cheap ($10 USD from Brando) and effective unit. It isn't without a few minor annoyances but if you find the PSP's screen to be a little small when reading text or gaming, then this is an essential purchase.

PSP screen is pretty big, biggest on the market, so I don't know if I see a real need for this. I had a similar device many years ago for an original GameBoy, that screen was real mini compared to PSP, so the enlargement was nice, but it added too much bulk to the console and the magnification hurt my eyes after extended use. For gaming, I think I wouldn't like having to look through a lens, on the GB it distracted me. I can see how reading text on PSP might be tough as the resolution isn't always the crispest for smaller type (like with the free magazines you can get from pspmagazines). If you have trouble reading on the PSP, an alternative might be those credit card sized magnifiers they sell in bookstores.
