| Summary: Perfect for PSP

House of Flying Daggers is a one-size-fits-all martial arts movie. Some cater only to the hardcore fans and some target a more mainstream audience, but House strikes a good balance and appeals to fanboys and newbies alike. It's worth noting that House actually has a story and isn't non-stop martial arts, so if the latter is what you're looking for, you may be disappointed. Still, what's here is dazzling, and you'll especially notice how colorful the film is; it's perfectly suited for the PSP and it simply explodes off the crystal-clear screen.
Whether there are really any flaws with the film depends on two things; first, your tolerance for CGI in martial arts movies and second, what you expect of the acting. Personally, I find it kind of cheap when martial arts movies resort to using CGI; leave that for Spider-Man. The acting is mostly very good, but you'll think on more than one occasion that another take would've helped a particular scene. But, like I said, these are minor and don't detract much from the overall experience.
The flaws of the UMD itself, however, are easier to point out. Why none of the Sony Pictures movies contain special features or a scene selection feature is beyond me. Personally I can live without special features, but since when is a lack of a scene selector acceptable?. This movie looks absolutely gorgeous and I appreciate that time and effort were spent on the video transfer, but a tad bit more could've been spent on implementing a scene selection. As far as language options go, you can choose either the original Chinese track or an English dub, and subtitles range from English 1 (subs language and on-screen text), English 2 (subs text only, for use with English dub), and French.
Overall, this is one of the better movies currently available on UMD Video. If you want a great, stylized movie with a lot of impressive martial arts that's incredibly gory and overflowing with vulgar language, buy Kill Bill. If you want a great, stylized movie with a lot of impressive martial arts that you can watch with children in the room, buy House of Flying Daggers.

Sounds good. I think I saw it for like $14.99 at Target yesterday as well. Just out of curiosity, is the main menu done well?

I have it and it is great. Missed seeing it at the theater.

taoofme: The menu is rather simple, like the other Sony Pictures UMD movies, but it looks really nice.

Love it. Saw it in Taiwan. Great movie if you like martial arts and action type movies.

I'd wish there was a way to show what you have on the PSP on your TV so you can share it with your friends..

The primary reason the movies aren't broken down into chapters is the mp4 format that the PSP is using. there would be a noticable lag between segments if they seperated the files. This is due to the way the PSP handles loading the movie player. I've been doing a lot of testing on this with memorysticks.

There is one UMD movie that has scene selections. The title evades me for the time being however.
