Right after buying this game, I was incredibly excited to play it. "Awesome! Another Metal Gear! On a new system, too!" After popping in the UMD, and seeing the mostly boring and drawn-out opening sequence, I realised that not a lot of work went into creating the between-the-action scenes. The opening sequence went on and on, and I would sit there, skimming through the text, no longer caring about the story but excited about getting into the action.

You learn most of the basics in the first mission, which is also a tutorial. Metal Gear games have always been great about incorporating the tutorial into the game, rather than making you read pages and pages of information. Though the game explains the basics to you, and they are mostly easy to grasp, it never really explains much of anything else, like Cost, which isn't very well-explained in the manual, either.

In terms of graphics, this game does well to show off how detailed characters can get. I think the biggest show is Snake's facial hair, it looks great and extremely detailed. You could probably count each hair, as you can see them plainly. Loading times throughout the game aren’t terrible, though I’m sort of a patient person, so I wouldn’t know if they’re completely horrible. Sometimes, though, in certain scenes of extreme action and there happen to be a lot of characters (or a huge one) on-screen, the game’s frame rate can drop drastically, though this never happens while you’re actually planning or doing anything.

I’d say the cards are a great way of playing this game, though in the beginning they take a lot of getting used to. It didn’t take me very long to get hooked, and once I was, I didn’t put game down for long periods, and would often miss class for it. Using the cards effectively would probably take the average player about half-way through the game. I’d say this would turn off a lot of people about the game, but I’d also say that it’s worth the time learning, as this game is almost as addictive as Lumines, though Lumines doesn’t take nearly as long to get addicted to.

Overall, I give this game a score of 88 because of all the shortcomings, although they take time to get used to. Things like a lack of explaining the intricacies of the game better, poor cut scenes, and a not-so-great story. If you’re a Metal Gear fan, and you’re willing to venture into Konami’s try at something totally different, buy this game, it’s worth owning if you’re hardcore enough. If you’re bored with the games you have now, and want something you can just pick up and play, go twiddle your thumbs or something. This isn’t for you.
