Even before you pop in your first game, you'll more than likely find yourself scrambling for a memory stick so that you can save games. As most of you know, the PSP is capable of more than just games, and to store all those MP4 movies and MP3 tracks you'll want a large capacity Memory Stick PRO Duo.

Introduction

SanDisk's 512MB Memory Stick PRO Duo comes in a small package with a convenient Memory Stick Duo Adaptor. While this isn't at all useful if you don't have any Memory Stick devices, it's a nice touch if you have a laptop or digital camera that can take advantage of this adaptor. Not to mention, the little plastic holder for this adaptor makes a nice storage case.

The cost of SanDisk's 512MB card is about $70 from Amazon, which comes out to about 13.6 cents per MB.

Benchmark

Putting the SanDisk 512MB through a rigorous benchmark across USB connection to the PSP yields fair scores. All numbers are in KB/sec: ReadWrite: 674, Read: 925, Write: 709, Random Read: 757, Random Write: 306, Copy: 437, 2K: 15, 32K: 199, 256K: 622, Variable: 912.

After you format the SanDisk 512MB in the PSP, you'll be left with about 467MB or a touch more. The difference in size can be partly alloted to data which the PSP requires to be on the Memory Stick. Taking into account that on average, a 128kbps MP3 will take up 1MB for every minute, you could store a little over 130 songs (for an average song length of 3-4 minutes). Any movies, saved games and variable-sized mp3's will obviously cause this number to fluctuate. This storage capacity isn't tremendous, but for a device whose top priority is gaming, this should be more than adequate, and if not, you can get a 1GB stick to double your capacity.

Overall

SanDisk's 512MB Memory Stick PRO Duo is an essential accompaniment to your PSP. You won't be able to store your entire MP3 and movie collection, but then that's not the intended of use of the Memory Stick nor PSP. It's a great and inexpensive way to store all of your save games, a good collection of mp3 and even mp4 movies. Read / write times in this capacity aren't that important, but the results are decent. Fill it up and hit the road for a healthy dose of multimedia entertainment.

captain, part of the reduced size when formatting teh 512mb stick is due to harddrive and memory card manufacturers using 1mb=1000kb, whereas normal computer measurements put 1mb=1024kb, so you are losing 24kb for every 1mb, 512mb suddenly becomes 488mb, the rest is lost by the filesystem (theres still a few mb missing, but only sony could tell you where thats gone )

About how big is a minute of a MPEG4 movie at highest and lowest quality?

I converted Catwoman to a 300MB MP4 file...
Not sure exact time on the movie but if you find that out and divide it into the 300MB you will know what it is per minute for low quality MP4.
I converted with the lowest quality using the 3gp converter downloaded from the following link. link
Not the greatest program, but not too shabby for free. You can change the language to English when you go to install this program.
