I've been playing this since the day after I got my PSP, and I have to say, it just keeps me coming back for more. It's not perfect from a physics standpoint (go into a drift at the start of a turn and the game tends to 'guide' you through as if on rails), but an arcade style racer doesn't need to be.
What it does need is fantastic graphics (check) great driving music (check) and the ability to slowly discover more cars and tracks with variable qualities (check). Ridge Racers totally blows people away when I show people the PSP for the first time. For a game with no direct licensing of cars or established tracks, the various locations and rides look and play great and the anticipation of revealing 'the next thing' in the game is palpable.
If it weren't for this game, I wouldn't be on this new device nearly as much as I have been. So often when a new system gets released, you buy a couple of games, one or both of which may be pretty good, but usually it's a waiting game until the first really killer title comes out. Not so with Ridge Racers -- the killer title is already here. If it's a sign of games to come on the PSP, we're in for one hell of a ride... So to speak.
