Well this for me has been long awaited. I am a fan of the Off-road Fury series, and was waiting for this one. I have had it on preorder for months. I wanted it bad enough I preordered a second copy for my son so i could try all the online features as soon as I got it!

Game modes

Single player mode
This mode is very close to the PS2 version (ATV Offroad Fury) The differences are great! It has more addons and unlockables than any of the other console series it follows. The mini games are playable in single or multi player modes, and items collected in single player can be used in multi player modes.

Multi Player
This is where Blazin' Trails is going leaps and bounds over its big brother console versions. You can play mini games, free roaming courses you create, or race the tracks that were pre created. You can link to your hot spot, and play anyone online and weed out who you want to play by skill level, area, or just by who you want to play against by setting up a buddy list (yes, IGNORE is an included feature). When playing with friends, you can wager cards/items collected from your single player modes. This game is deep!

Some of the bonus features include cards, minigames, and a new "credits" system. In the credits system you can use your credits to buy new items as before, but with the new addition of music videos. Not really a prioity, but fun and cool nonetheless.

Another great feature comes from the online connection. You can race against the 10 fastest racers in the world ranks!!!! Well, not really. But you race their ghosts, or your ghost if you are lucky enough to beat one and take their place!

Mini Games

Tag ball
Play a game of tag with ATVs, and a basketball. The person who has it is the only one to score points, so if you dont have the ball steal it from your opponent!

King of the hills
Jump various hills and do stunts. The person with the highest score off that hill has a tag placed on it. Steal someones already tagged hill by scoring more trick points off of it than they did! The most hills owned wins.

Hockey
The same game as in ATV3 for the PS2

Basketball
Do you really need a description????

Soccer
C'mon really?????

Graveyard Madness
Chase down and collect ghosts while racing in a graveyard. Crash or run into an opponent and lose some or all of your ghosts!

Treasure hunt
Free roam around in search of coins collect more than your opponent to win.

Beach tagger
Same as king of the hill, just in a beach setting.

Rings of fire
Race against the clock and your oppnent to get through the most rings possible (free roaming)

Bomb Dodge
Pick up bombs and hold on as long as you can! your opponents will try to take it from you the longer you hold it the more points you get. The fun part comes when the bomb is getting ready to go off, toss it at one of your oppenents to blow them up! Or in my case I usually hold on too long. No points for blowing yourself up!

Overall

To sum it all up, this is a great, fun, deep and impressive game. Never have I seen a handheld racer so deep! It has been an amazingly fun 48 hours!!!! (so far)

I have not really noticed any problems with the frame rate. It looks very smooth really if you ask me. I have been playing Gameboy games since 1990 when I was in high school, and have been primarily a "handheld gamer" since then. I know the differences in consoles and handheld games are vast, but playing this on the PSP and playing it on the PS2, I cant see the difference. Load times are longer than i normaly like from a hand held game, but the game play easily makes up for it!

I rarely participate in comments but I simply couldn't stomach this reviewer's sickenly glowing review of ATV Offroad Fury so I have to comment. I shared the reviewers anticipation of the game. I'd had it pre-ordered and fully paid for a month before the PSP's release and dig these type of ATV racing games in general.

I even agree that on the surface, the game looks good. The graphics, although not as good as a few other games, are pretty good. The framerate is ok. For the most part, it's solid. However, when you crash it slows a little. But overall, the framerate didn't bother me. And, yes. This game has many features and options and seems like it would reward someone who played it alot.... the problem is, its not fun enough to play a lot because of the HORRIBLE control!!!!

This games great flaww is its frustrating control makes it unbearable. I'm great at racing game and very used to ASTV racing game controls, but this PSP version is sooo difficult to get used to. It's almost impossible not to overturn. If you use the analog control, which I usually prefer, you barely have any turning control. However, if you use the directional pad, you'll find it a bit easier to turn but it becomes hard to do the down-up motion used to preload jumps.

I have to re-race the first three tracks repeatedly just to get 1st and 2nd places... This isn't because of my skill. I've rarely encounter a racer on any system (I have all the current consoles) that I didn't place 1st on the 1st track right away. But this one took forever just because I kept crashing due to the crappy control. Which bring up another negative.... it's way too easy to flip of you ATV just by lightly tapping something on the side of the track... between the control and that constant falls, this game frustrates the hell outta me.

I wish I could agree with the reviewer and say I loved this game. I really wanted to. In fact, what pisses me off the most is how much potential it had. There is so much offered in the game as far as unlockables and multiplayer that it should be one of the top reviewed games..... but it's just too frusstrating to play. Unless you're ok with logging hours of frustration just to figure out how best to control your ATV and place in the first few races, I wouldn't recommend you buy this. Rent it first!!!

are there a lot of people who play this game online or not? more or less than twisted metal?

I just tried connecting to check for ya, but although I connected enough to authenticate, I couldn't connect to the lobby server. However, the first day I got the game I was surprised by how many ppl were online (I expected to be amoung the first). So many so that my nick was already taken and I had to pick a new one. Multiplayer quick play was painless and it had some nice quickplay and optiquickplay options.... the whole online experience seemed much smoother than twisted metals since they had those initial server problems... you can even download ghost files of the worlds top racers....Anyways, how good multiplayer could have been is one of the reasons I'm disappointed in ATV's control... if it just controlled better, I'd totally agree with the original reviewer

So, as an "older" member and first-time (modern) gamer, can someone tell me where to get the codes, etc. to unlock the goodness here?
I bought this last night, and I guess it's because I'm a nOOb that I find it really fun? It IS too easy to fall off, and you sometimes get stuck and can't move (need to restart the race) but overall, I'm glad I bought this.

That's cool, slb... I'm not trying to downplay anyone's opinion... If you find it fun, that's great. I just want to warn of other like me to rent it first and make sure they find it fun...I just still wish the control was better. I just had 20 minutes to waste before a meeting so I played the Bayside field track on normal difficulty... I completed 4 races and always finished last, and also restarted in the midst of those races about 5 times to recover from some frustrating crashes...

Maybe I'm just not as good a racer gamer as I thought (although I finished all the ps2 versions of offroad fury).... But I'm still really getting frustrated by the control. Granted, I'm much more used to it now, after some consistent play time. But it still troubles me and I HAVE to use the digital pad since the stick just doesn't work well for me in this game.

Oh yeah, if you're looking for codes, they always show up at gamefaqs.com (for any game, any system). Here's the PSP page:

link

I don't see any codes for ATV yet, but as soon as they are discovered, you're sure to see them there.

PS Gamefaqs also has some more message board discussion about the game itself:

Skined: no offense at all taken. Just that from a PSP nOOb's POV, it's not too bad, and in fact, a lot of fun. I don't find the controls bad - I'm getting used to them.
I think that for anyone to expect a small, handheld device to be as great as a home system is too much to ask. I think it's brilliant - I haven't has this much fun - or blown this much money - since my iPods took over my life!
Thanks for the links too - that's great. I can show my kid I'm not too old to rock!

I think I looked at the controlls as touchy, but I got used to them real fast. i just went to my ps2 to play and now the controls seem sluggish..... I guess i cant have my cake and eat it too!

I picked up this game today and was concerned when I read the reviews about the controls. Turns out they are just fine. Sensitive, yes - but after about 30 minutes of practice, I could easily race any course with complete control. The online gaming is really fun. The only thing that could make these games a bit more fun online is a mic so we could jaw at each other.

HERE IS IGN's REVIEW........................

10 Presentation
An outstanding network feature set, coupled with an outstanding career structure, tied up with an outstanding auto-save. Outstanding.

6.0 Graphics
You can't call it ugly, and you can't call it broken, but you also can't call it smooth or pretty ... it's just blah.

6.5 Sound
Anything with Auf Der Maur is a start for me, but otherwise, this is just loud and grating ... sort of like the real thing, but not good.

6.5 Gameplay
It's less forgiving for pansies compared to ATV3 on PS2, and it still comes close to that console game. But it's just never anywhere near as fun to ride.

9.0 Lasting Appeal
Beginners won't be able to dig as deep into this as they could the console games because of the rough control. but online and unlockables are worth some effort.

7.5 OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

7.9 Reader Average
