I've enjoyed this first installment of the Gagharv Trilogy during slow, contemplative moments with my PSP. My Japanese isn't great, but it's enough to understand. I'd say that's a real plus here, because otherwise you'll have a hard time knowing where to go and who to talk to.
That said, you COULD play it with zilch Nihongo because each time you walk near someone you must talk to for the story to progress, a red explanation mark appears above their head. I'm not sure it would be any fun to play that way, but if you're desperate for that Japanese RPG flavor, currently, this is a great option. When I bought it, it was the only option.
I haven't been disappointed. The graphics are pleasing - similar to other low-spec Falcom PC titles from the late-mid-to-late-late-90's. The sprites are never shoddy, and the character art, by Minako Iwasaki impresses but never flaunts, just like the work she did for the YS titles. The low-poly backgrounds are never lacking in texture detail - and that tends to make up for the world being constructed from boxes, more or less. Atmospheric lighting helps too.
On the down side, the music is really dippy, but but that's not for lack of production finesse - just an overall smurfy vibe that will kill you if you're used to Mitsuda.
The load times are not the hell that everyone says they are. When I'm playing I hardly notice them. It's a lot like what we experienced from 1st generation PS1 titles, load-time-wise. So get over it.

Do you reckon you'll be getting the sequel? How long was the total adventure? I was interested in this one, but then I saw videos of the loading times and decided against it.

I don't think I'll be getting the sequel unless I hear really great things about it, but it looks like more of the same to me, which is fine, but not really thrilling. At this stage, Tales of Eternia, or the upcoming YSVI would be better choices in my opinion.
The gameplay is story-focused. The combat is not very deep, but it is about what we learned to love in the days of 16-bit.
I have to be careful to remain neutral about this thing, because that's how I feel about it. I could say some great things and some bad things, but at the end of the day it just all comes out neutral.
I'm waiting for something astounding, like XenoSaga, or even for that matter Xenogears, or a Lunar game (DS gets that), or FFX-2, or... you get the picture. I want something either really involved, or really gorgeous, or preferrably both, but it's just too early to expect that.
I give it until next Christmas before something really blows my mind RPG-wise on this thing.edited: May 04 2005
