| Summary: Great game for newcomers and wipeout diehards
97
The graphics in this game are amazing, as you speed through futuristic cities, blow opponent ships up, and go up and over the speed of 800 mph, you feel it, and see it. The game has a lot of style, and shows it everywhere. My only gripe, and i had to search for it, was that it didnt quite reach 60 frames per sec, and i had to look hard to see, but it came damn close. 10/10. Graphics are great.
Even for newcomers, wipeout is a very easy game to pick up and play. I have played wipeout when it was on the PSone, so I was already accustomed to the controls, and for wipeout pros, nothing has changed. The L shoulder button is to airbrake on the left, R for the airbrake on the right. The square button is to use the weapon pick-up, and the circle is to absorb, ill talk about this a little later. The x button is thrust, and the triangle button is the rear camera, to see what is behind you. An interesting thing about wipeout pure, is that it gives you the option to absorb, or use te weapons. If the weapon is good, and you need to use it, you can use it, but say your shields are low, or the weapon wont help you at the moment, you can choose to absorb it, to increase your shield a bit. This choice is a nice addition and gives you a choice. Other things that you can do during the came are pressing left right left or right left right, to a barrel roll either way while you are in the air. Not only does this move look cool, but when you hit the ground, you get a little boost to put you ahead a bit.
To show you it is easy to pick up for new comers, ill tell you a quick story. I give my frind my psp, loaded up with wipeout pure, and he started to play. he absolutely loved it, he knew how to steer the ship, and use the weapons, from just playing with it for a minute or two. This kid only has nintendo 64 as a gaming system, and has never played psp or wipeout, or seen both of them. I was a amazed how easy it was for him to play it.
The gameplay is addictive because I can pick it up and play it for a few minutes in single race mode, or zone, or time trial. Or i can pick it up and play it for an hour or two, in tournament mode. As you unlock ships and gain new levels, the game gets better. You get faster classes, and each time you get a gold medal, you get some concept art or vehicle sketches as a little prize, which are all nice things to uncover. the game gets very immersive if you want it to, or if you are a wipeout or racing junkie, and you need a quick fix, it will give you that too. The game is great. I will give it a 10/10 for gameplay.
This game is a solid launch title for the psp and everyone willl enjoy it. My only gripe is the slightly slow loading times, but it is nice to have a couple of seconds to recoup from a close race, or a long tournament. Wipeout Pure gets a 97. Pick it up, have a good time!

How do you know the game didn't reach 60 frames per second? Are you able to calculate frame rates with your eyes alone? From what I know there isn't a benchmark app for the PSP and if there was I'm sure the game would probably only be clocked around 40-50 FPS depending on the situation.Anyway, Just giving you a hard time. Nice write up beside the FPS comment. Great game with an awesome interweb hack :0)edited: Apr 15 2005

It reaches 60fps, but can't hold it when there is too much stuff going on like Ridge Racer, although it looks amazing.

Haha sorry vashpike, but I meant what chocotaku said. When the Game gets very graphically intensive, like any othe game, like mulitple explosions, different cars, the detail isnt as great, but the game is the most beautiful game, and only if you look for that, you find it, just like I explained in the review. Sorry to offend you, but thanks for the comment, and indeed it is a great game, as is Ridge Racers.

Have it, love it, currently an Ethusiast with 53 Gold medals, getting a few medals everyday

I would have to say Wipeout and Ridge Racer are a close tie for graphics superiority on the PSP.
+
Definitely, they both really show what the PSP has to offer, and it is really nice that they are both launch titles.
+
eh. mediocre review. you didn't talk about sound, music, replayability, or multiplayer. trying to win that brando case and protector? try harder. first review i bet.

pk511, I said this was just my first impressions of wipeout, and that can't do a full review until i play the game more, or my opinion would not be based on what this game has to offer. This is just a rough opinion on the game as I have only played it for a while, just to give those people who are on edge about buying it, some more info. And yes, this is only my second review, and i am not trying to wind the brando case and protector. But i thank you for your positive criticization.
edit: Sorry, I forgot to state in my review, that it was just a first impression, whoops.edited: Apr 17 2005

is it just me or has anyone else noticed pk511 complains alot? "If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything."
+
