When I first got Wipeout: Pure, I will admit that I tried to exchange it but they only offered me 2.50! Now I look back on that attempt with shame. In the beginning I had complaints about the gameplay, thinking that it was slow and difficult to maneauver the ships. Well after reading some reviews here on PSP411, I decided to give it another go. After some practice the ships handling got easier and I figured out that when you are not riding the walls, Wipeout is a really fast game.
Advice: When you start playing this game, do it on easy mode, and use only ships with 4/5 or 5/5 handling. You can get used to the controls and the speed slowly. After getting a handle on the controls, you can up the speed to medium, and wow is it fast!
Production (graphics/sound): Both are well done. I really enjoy the scenery and the futuristic cars. The graphics are easy on the eyes and brilliant. Explostions/shrapnal look superb as well. Techno bumps as you race, it is a bit repetitive, but it embraces the future theme. I really wish you could use your PSP playlist to create the soundtrack.
Online: Only Ad-hoc is available for Wipeout: pure. It is a lot of fun though. Basically all the options are open for ad-hoc play (tournament or single race). Also I was impressed with the gameplay customization options.
THey are coming out with a sequel soon, Wipeout: Pulse, that I will surely pick up after working through all the Pure tracks. This game is a justified classic and deserves at least a half hour of play before judgement.
Nice review! I wonder why it got stuck down below. <?> I honestly felt about the same as you did about Wipeout. I never did give it the chance you gave it however. It came out with a BUNCH of other games..and I ended up caught up in them . Time to dust off my disk and give it another go! Btw, you didn't mention in your review the downloadable tracks. There are quite a few from what I've read. If you haven't downloaded them.. THAT will keep you busy a good long time. Again, good review! Thanks for renewing my interest in a game I never gave a fair shot.
