I tried the Altoids case method and found it to be unsuitable. The UMDs clattered around in the tin, and if you really try to cram 5 UMDs in it, you're liable to crack their shells getting them in and out, let alone if the tin gets scrunched wrong.

These UMD cases are great, though. $5 for 2 is not a bad price and I prefer having a single case with multiple games than a bunch of individual cases or protective thingies. Sure, the UMDs can clatter if you have less than 3 in the case... so.. keep 3 in the case. Duh. Get more games, or put the demo UMD in there to buffer the space. The cotton ball idea is a good one, too.
