The next instalment of the Initial D racing game series comes the 'Street Stage' version for the Sony PSP. With 3 arcade versions, a PS2 version and an upcoming 4th arcade version - Street Stage makes the world ask Sega, "How could a worldwide arcade game fit onto a single UMD disc?" Amazing, isn't it? Well, Street Stage, is pretty much Arcade Stage Version 3, just squeezed into a UMD, without a steering wheel and a twist!
For ones who don't know, the twist is - a new scoring system - yes, that's right! A new system which you don't get points at the end of each race and get an upgrade every 2500-5000 points. After each race, you have the choice of 1 in 3, trading cards! Trading cards are used for tips, collecting and also vital to tune up your car as well. The awesome thing is...? You could even trade these cards via wireless ad-hoc mode and accepting challenges via wireless.
There are new songs, and unlocks too! Which what makes the game more user-friendly and entertaining. What I love most about this game (besides from the gameplay itself) is how organised the game is set out as well as the instruction booklet. Everything is easy to read, the interface is clear, colourful and most of all - it's all step by step and logic! Nothing to worry about!
More onto the gameplay, you have the usual story mode, time attack and Bunta challenges as your arcade version, a Project D section, trading card options, tuning shop, options, wireless battle and also a garage!
Sound is crisp and crystal clear. I recommend playing with headphones on, it makes you feel that you are into the game more! Graphics are just amazing! It's not as smooth as the PS2 and not as bold as the arcade versions, but it's simple, precise and very detailed! Loads quickly, without no problems at all. The only thing is - it may take long to master the steering's sensitivity. Other than that... The game is just brilliant! One of the best, I've played!
Now... Availabilty? If you reside outside of Japan, you may have to get it imported to your country via a game shop, anime store or online. For my version, it is region-free, so the Japanese Initial D worked fine for an Australian PSP model.
