| Summary: Good game, not only for kids.
90
When my sister bought her PSP, our dad allowed her to buy 2 games. We had our minds made up for Burnout, But my sister insisted on this. I thought it would suck, like most other movie based games, but racing couldn't be that bad. After a few hours of playing, I didn't want to let go of the game, my sister snatched it, its hers after all.
Story
There's not much of the main story from the movie, but it's still good. It would have been better if Lighting was actually going for the piston cup, but the game seems to act as a sequal for the movie. After Lighting McQueen moves his headquarters to Radiator Springs, DJ, Snot Rod, Wingo and Boost (the bosses) decide they want a peice of the racing action. To drive them out of town all you have to do is race the cars of radiator springs, to choose who gets to race those 4 hotshots, and kick them out of town one by one.
Controls
Unlike Ridge Racer, this game doesn't require getting used to the controls, its pretty much like most other games, with a few minor changes. You can hop over things that would slow you down (which is something I could never master), the drifting feature here is called powerslide. You can build up the boost meter by simple driving, powersliding or 'drafting' other cars, in which you bump into them or such, it will steal some of their boost, but I haven't noticed anything significant. The steering isn't very effective unless you want to turn less than 45 degrees, so the poweslide is useful at most of times, which would explain why my sister can't win any races.
Game Modes
There are 5 game modes, though all of them are racing:
Story mode
I have explained this above, beating any of the 4 bosses will unlock that character in the other modes. Racing again any of the tracks you have won first place in, you will get an option to play in "postcard rally", where there are 3 postcard peices scattered on the track, find them all and win first place to unlock something
Grand Prix
There are 4 cups (sadly not one of them is the piston cup) win them and unlock a car for each cup, this is like world tours in Ridge Racer and like tournaments in Midnight Club and Wipeout Pure. Each cup consists of 4 races.
Time Trial
Race against time, earning 1st, 2nd and third place ribbons, aswell as unlocking different paint jobs for your characters.
Custom Race
This works well for practice, race any of the races that are in the game, locked or unlocked, with any car you have unlocked.
Multiplayer
Sadly, this game only supports Ad Hoc mode, you can play with upto 3 friends, that is 4 contestants in the race.
Graphics
The graphics are nice and smooth, I enjoy forgetting about the race I race in, to press triangle (look behind button) and watch my characters mouth while steering left and right, it moves. But then I end up losing the race, Im not that good in steering in opposite ways.
Loading Times
The loading times do not take alot of time, plus they offer a tip everytime the preloader comes up. I find the preloader bar very useful, it would tell you how much is left to wait for.The loading time is barely enough to excercise you fingers before the next race.
Sound
SFX and voices are good, and the music is fine, I just don't know any of the songs.
Overall
Pretty good game for everyone to play, every track is unique, with its different obstacles and hidden shortcuts, though I feel I've overrated it when I gave it a 90. The story mode is too short, but to beat the whole game it would possiblly take a while.
