Before buying this game ($20) I thoroughly scanned the sites for reveiws of this game and they were all mediocre at best. The most common gripes being that it was the console version of the first game repackaged for the PSP. Seeing as I never played the first iteration of the game, I wouldn't have known the difference. So taking this into account I can say that I was quite suprised by the game overall. This is a futbol/soccer game, albeit dumbed down for fast and furious gameplay. So be advised that it may not be to the liking of hardcore sport sim enthusiats, however it does bear the EA Big name.
The first thing you notice are the menus and interface. They are slick and easy to navagate. You basically have the choice between quick play, career mode, tournament play and mini games (a whopping 2 of them). The modes are pretty self explanatory. The career mode basically pits you against other teams of 3 in a first to 5 goals game. As you progress you are awarded points you can spend on aquiring new and better skilled players. You are also constantly unlocking various new threads for you players so there is plenty of customization there. Within this mode there is a mini 3-game tourney for each venue. Win this and you can unlock newer venues and players. This setup can get repetitve, but no more than any similar type game in the genre. Load times are very quick (even with the autosave feature on) and you won't be waiting any longer than 10-20 seconds to start pounding the pavement.
The graphics are smooth and impressive. Little touches like dust clouds are welcome. Player animations are smooth and fluid. For example, when you unleash one of your Gamebreaker kicks (acquired when you perform and string together tricks using the triangle button and/or the left trigger) and happen to score a direct hit on the goalie in the crown jewels, he drops to the ground moaning and rolling in pain leaving the net wide open for an easy score. No wonder real soccer players cover themselves on free kicks. The ball physics are decent with a hiccup once and awhile. The one thing I did notice is that sometimes your computer-controlled goalie is asleep. There are times when the ball rebounds off the walls and is slowly rolling back to your net at about 2 mph and all you can do is watch it roll between the legs of your goalie into the back of you net. Funny thing is, I 've played real soccer and have seen this happen on a number of occasions so maybe this is not so unbelievable. At least it happend rarely in-game.
The controls have been described as horrendous so I wasn't expecting much. But again, after about 20 minutes you will have command of them. They are not as bad as critics make them out to be. Their main criticism is that when you try to pass/shoot and hit the button a number of times quickly your player doesn't pass/react right away. In fact, this only happens when your player is in the middle of pulling off some kind of acrobatic trick. When he's done the trick, he'll pass/shoot the ball which kinda makes sense.
Much has been made about the soundtrack for this game and it is all warranted. The EA Trax list for this game is fresh and diverse. There are no two tracks alike. As for the in game sound, it is on the sparse side. Players yell and grunt on the pitch. Goal posts and scuffles sound as they should. Ambient sounds such as street noises are nothing stellar but adequate.
There are a few omissions that I would have liked to have seen. The addition of play via web (only ad hoc) and the juggling game included in FIFA 06 would have been nice.
Overall a solid game. Great graphics, speedy load times, plenty of recognisable players, albeit a little repetitive but perfect for pick up and go gaming. And isn't that what a PSP game is for?
Graphics - 8
Sound - 6 (with EA Trax - 8.5)
Gameplay - 7
Ooverall - 7.5
