| Summary: Still one of the best games for the PSP!
90
Graphics - 85
The graphics are what you’d expect from a Hot Shots game’ very cartoony and cutesy. There’s not really too much to say about them. The courses look and show enough detail so you can read the slopes and angles before taking a swing. They’re overall good but nothing to write home about. The graphics are not the main attraction in this title.
Sound - 80
The sound in this tile is adequate. The music during gameplay is not that great but are you really expecting fantastic music in a golf title?
Controls - 98
The controls for this game are very straight forward and easy to use. There is a very minor learning curve so even newbies to this series will be able to pick up the game and start playing. The game uses a two press method for swinging a club. Press the “X” button once to start the power meter and press it again to stop it as close to the accuracy line for a better shot. If your timing is off on the second press you will slice the ball to the left or the right. You can also use the “[]” button to perform a power shot. This allows you to hit the ball further but reduces your ability to hit the ball straight. You use the “L” and “R” shoulder buttons to scroll through your various clubs.
Gameplay - 95
I realize this game was released close to the system launch but in my opinion it is still one of the best games made for the PSP. I bought it over a year ago and I still enjoy playing it. The only reason I didn’t give this category a perfect score is due to the lack of on-line play. It would be great to be able to play matches using infrastructure mode against players all over the world. As it stands this title on includes AD HOC mode. There are several courses, golfers, and accessories to unlock extending the life of this title. So far I have unlocked about 80% of all of the items in the game. The unlockables include new characters (with improved stats such as accuracy or power), new equipment (ball and clubs that add bonuses to your game like extra backspin or more power), clothes (just changes your character’s appearance), and courses (more challenging shots or special rules like -2 strokes for landing in a sand trap).
Overall - 90
I remember when Hot Shots Golf was first released for the PS1. My friends kept telling me to try it and I kept saying “but I hate golf”. Finally I broke down, played it, and have loved it ever since. I recommend this title for anyone that owns a PSP system. Especially now since this title can be purchased at a discount since it’s been out for awhile. I have owned the game for over a year and I still play it to try and unlock all of the items. The only problem I see with the game is that the course difficulty can ramp up pretty quickly. Also trying to unlock some of the later characters can be incredibly hard forcing you to rely on luck rather than skill. You have to hope they actually make a mistake (extremely rare) and you play a flawless round to beat them.

Nice personal review.
I was thinking about picking this or tiger woods up soon as they are now hitting the bargin bin (or become 'best hits').
I'm interested to know which game people think has the best control method. From your review I gather this uses an accuracy bar where'as TW uses an analogue swing. Thoughts?
