I was really excited when I heard about a PSP version of Sudoku. I had never played it in a book or newspaper, but I enjoyed it on the web. A PSP version would rule. I always have my PSP with me. Sudoku, anywhere any time.

I finally picked it up and from the first it was awesome. The graphics are very nice, especially for such a simple puzzle game. You can even add your own background image from pictures on your memory stick. Something I didn’t even think about but was delighted to discover. The audio is wonderful. The background music is very soft and relaxing. It is very nice and helps you think.

The gameplay was something I worried about. I can use my keyboard when I play Sudoku on my computer, and the Nintendo DS has a stylus to draw with. The controls for the game worked out really well. They are intuitive and you can scroll around the screen to the necessary cell with ease. Rapid use of the shoulder buttons to pick numbers turned out to be a breeze as well.

So with all of these good points, why was I disappointed? Attention: Please Wait. There is an awful bug in the US version of this game. For some reason, repeatedly during play the game will throw up a message saying “Attention: Please Wait!” At first I thought it was just trying to load more music or something. I tried turning the background music off. I thought that would be strange since it’s such a simple game and the PSP is quite powerful. Well something else is wrong because that didn’t help at all. The game will still throw up that message at random times for no apparent reason. It breaks your concentration and the clock continues to count down while the message is displayed. In a game where you are trying to solve puzzles as quickly as possible, that is just unacceptable.

This bug turns what would otherwise be a great game into a huge waste of money. Apparently Ubisoft knows of this bug and they say that if the PSP is plugged in, it is not as prevalent. Plugged in!?! I bought it because it was a portable game! If I wanted to play while plugged in I could play over the web on my computer for free!!

Do not buy this game unless you can get a non US version somewhere.
