| Summary: The future of racing is now
95
If one were to compile a list of the great sleeper franchises of gaming history, WipeOut would easily be in the top ten. Since the original WipeOut was released in 1995, the franchise has pushed the limits of console framerates and player's resistance to sudden fits of seizure. All without budget-busting in-your-face ad campaigns.
WipeOut Pure is no exception. Gorgeous tracks, a more than appropriate electronic soundtrack, and an elegant control scheme make for a well-balanced and immersive gaming experience. Add in the downloadable content from the developer and you have a game whose replay value is immense.
Graphically WipeOut sets the bar. It is easily a benchmark against which all other games for the PSP should be compared. Bright, colorful background terrain, well-designed and challenging tracks, and simple but unique craft combine to form a feast for the eyes, even at the insane speeds the racer travels.
Layer on top of the eyecandy a music soundtrack that is never out of sync. By this we mean pair any random course with any random music track, and you will have an amazing gameplay experience no matter what. The music enhances the experience, never distracting or intruding on the gameplay.
Of course all the pretty lights and sounds are meaningless if you can't play the game. The intuitive control scheme is easy to pick up and makes sense to just about everyone. The D-pad gives you basic steering and pitch, and the L and are buttons provide additional steering help as airbrakes. Just keep your right thumb on the gas (X) and try not to get killed by your human or AI opponents.
Other reviews have commented on the repetitive nature of WipeOut Pure. This would be a bad thing in say, a level-progressing platformer, but for a racing game it's what keeps the player coming back. Each unlocked track presents a new challenge. Each vehicle responds differently at each level. Each speed class forces you to retune your reflexes. Through "repetitive" gameplay Studio Liverpool actual provides variety in a simple and elegant form. Put simply, you don't play WipeOut to save the Princess, you play to win.
