First, you need to realize that this game is a throwback to the 1980s and early 90's. Gameplay is 2D and within a limited playing field that reminded me at first of a Commodore 64 game called "Impossible Mission."
I'm not saying this to run the game down, mind you - but it might come as a surprise to someone who hasn't seen a 2D game in years.
But what the games lacks in a 3rd dimension it makes up for with style and game play. The graphics are extremely stylized, kind of a 1950's-plus-adrenaline look - the title character, Mr. Esc, wears a snap brim fedora, many of the women wear those big hats you only see in books these days.
The sound is just as dramatic and stylish. Special information is queued with a phone-ring - and I have to wonder how many PSP users have actually *heard* an old fashioned rotary phone ring - and the music is equally interesting. My only real complaint about the sound is the people you rescue - each one has a small stock of complaints, and they will make those complaints over and over.
Game play is a combination of puzzle and 2D run-and-jump. You have to figure out how to get all the people to the exit safely, using the equipment (and people) at hand and you have to do it as quickly as possible.
