I have tried almost all program's to convert movie's into the MP4 program.
3GP : is nice and fast, but gives you few options
Video 9 : is easy to use and the option to download and immediately convert is nice, but still setting you standard setup can be tiresome
Image Converter from Sony : Probably the fastest one, but oh so little options and possibilities, and not freeware.
When you want to use Rapiz PSP Convertor, you gotta have time, because it is a slow program. It can take your computer (and this depends on the strength of your pc) more then 3 hours to convert a movie of 90 minutes. And that’s with one pass.
The reason I use this awesome piece of software is for it’s possibilities. It lets you set everything, the way you want it to be.
*Options*
Video quality : ranging from 92 kbps to 1500 kbps (15 possibilities)
Audio quality : from 32 kbps to 128 kbps (6 possibilities)
Stereo or mono
Video resolution: al the possible resolutions (sizes) you want.
You can set it to 1 pass or 2 pass. I can really recommend the 2 pass. This way the video file is converted twice, and it gives the best possible outcome. My movies are superb quality.
You even have an option that will remove the black bands from you widescreen movie before it gets converted to the MP4 file. Which is a nice thing, because watching a widescreen movie on your PSP, doesn’t do justice to it’s beautiful, big screen.
You just select the file you want to convert. Click your setting and push start. The program will do the rest.
The only thing this piece of software is lacking, is that it doesn’t say it’s progress. You have no idea of how many % of the movie it already converted. You will just have to wait until it’s finished. And oh yeah, it always gives you a bit of a scare when finished, cause there is girl shouting trough your speakers to tell you that your movie has converted. If you have a weak hart, watch out.
Oh and did I mention this program is freeware? You can download it for free on the Rapiz website (www.rapiz.net)
Tip : When you first install it, it comes in Spanish (catalan to more precisely). Just click on CONFIGURAR and click on English. Or any other language you speak.
Pro’s : user-friendly interface, choose al your options, a lot of options
Con’s : slow (but then again it gets results), no progress report while converting, scary ending sound.

I prefer iPSP. It's really easy, and does everything.

so can we get a consensus, what are acceptable encoding settings for the typical 700mb avi?

I use 480 Kbps video quality, 96 kbps sound, 29 fps a 368x208 video resolution and always a 2 pass. This get your typical 700mb movie on a 512mb memory stick, with good quality of sound, video and a perfect screen resolution.
An iPSP may be good, but it's for MAC's. Don't have that :-(

I used this, took about 6 hours because I did two passes and then at the end it just said error and there was no video to be found. No explanation, just the word error. What a waste of time. I am back to Video 9, at least I know it will work.

just thought I 'd let you know, most of the movies you watch on PSP should be widescreen because the PSP screen is wide. The letterboxes that some videos have are not automatically removed by the PSP and could be removed by this program. There is a difference between widescreen and letterbox. Both are set up so you can see the full picture that was intended without pan+scan but letterbox is aimed at regular resolution screens. This program most likely just cuts off the black strips in letterbox and converts the video to widescreen while shrinking it down to fit onto the PSP.
