I am not really a Mega Man fan, but I played the previous titles, including the first three and the X series. To me, when I started playing this remake of Mega Man X, I just felt that old fashioned 2D side-scrolling feeling coming back to me again.

Graphics - 85
The graphics are now updated to PSP standards. It's also nice that the backgrounds have become reworked with more detail and are absolutely stunning. The lighting effects are totally awesome, especially when blowing stuff up with your X buster! The only problem is that X's face (the protagonist) lacks detail. The animation cut scenes are a nice addition and help you understand what is going on in the story, but the voice acting and script writing is not up to par. For instance, your first encounter with X's rival, Vile, argues, "I'm just here to cause trouble for you! I hate you!" That is very subpar.

Gameplay - 82
It plays exactly like the original version. This is a good thing or a bad thing for some people. I haven't gotten through the end yet, but the levels seem kind of short. Getting armor and parts for X is pretty awesome! But every upgrade location is relocated, so it's not going to be the same location you found it in the SNES version.

Sound - 72
The sound effects are excellent, very similar to the SNES but enhanced. The remixes of the soundtracks were really nothing special though. I guess I expected too much. I enjoyed the original score much better.

Load Times - 90
That's the great part of this game. The loads only take about a second. And that's only in the beginning, so you don't have to worry about it throughout the game.

Replay Value - 80
There are normal and hard modes (probably once beaten, there will be an expert mode?). Once you complete the game, you get to play as Vile, which is one of the reasons I got Maverick Hunter. With a different arsenal of weapons at your disposal, this will give you other means to play.

I did not want to mention the storyline, since it's not much of a story to begin with. What's cool about Maverick Hunter is that it also comes with a demo of Mega Man Powered Up (a remake of the first Mega Man but in 3D and has baby-ish characters).

Overall - 82
Overall Maverick Hunter is a great game if you're a fan of Mega Man of course, or even 2D side scroll shooters. For me, the game was alright and I will be keeping it since it is the only side-scroll shooter game I own so far. And for just $30, its a price that can't be beat.
