I have played with numerous rippers, decrypters, and shrinking programs over the years and most are fairly easy to operate once you understand the process. I have also used PSP Video 9 which actually did a pretty good job as well after some "tweaking". But quite franlky, I am having less and less time to tinker and "tweak" everytime I want to convert a movie to another format. having to use 2 and sometimes 3 tools to get the results I expect (with a fair amount of trial and error) is starting to get old.
A friend of mine has the PQDVD product to convert movies for his iPod and he was very pleased. After looking at the simple process and the consistent, quality results, I convinced myself to go ahead and purchase PSP Movie Creator from PQDVD and hav not been disappointed.
Pros
One click processing - although there are several tunables paramters (audio quality, video quality, image size, frame rates, etc.), it works out of the box - period. From commercial DVD to MP4 in one step.
Consistent - I get the same results wihtout having to "tweak" from movie to movie.
Speed - although it still takes some time, significantly faster that the old method I was using with some of the other opensource & freeware tools.
Thumbnail creation - it does allow you to take a snapshot of whatever is in the movie window to make that the thumbnail that you will see on the PSP.
Cons
No batch mode - due to the nature of the way the software works, I do not see a way to process a batch of videos at once. It is one at a time.
Occasional System Hangs - I cannot prove this is due to PSP Movie Creator, but after coverting say 5-6 movies back-to-back, PSPMC seems to go out to lunch on me and hangs. My best bet is to restart PSPMC every 2-3 movies and I have not seen the problem resurface. Will have to keep an eye on this one. Could be my system config?
File Transfer - It does have a very basic interface for transferring movies to your PSP via USB or a memory stick via a USB card reader. Very basic in nature. Would be nice if it supported more formats than just MP4's.
Thumbnail - Although you can take a snapshot (as mentioned above) - I do not see anyway to edit the name of the video as shown on the PSP. For example, if you have 10 episodes of 24 on your memory stick, the thumbnails themselves are too small to read the episode name as shown on the screen. So it would be nice to be able to change the Title to something meaningful other than "UNDEFINED", "VTS_01_01", or"Data" which is what the titles ALL currently say. Maybe there is a way to do his already and I just have not found it yet.
As you can see, my cons are minor and I am very satified with the software.
GREAT review. I am also looking for a permanent solution for puttin movies on my 2 gig stick. I only have to ask you, please... What are your system specs? And do you think this software is system dependant [i.e. You have to at least have a 2 gig system with 1 gig of RAM, or at least a 128 meg video card to get good results]? Thanks for the great review! Gonna go check this out now.
