Summary: A must have PSP accessory

While trying to watch movies or trying to play games, the PSP's built in speakers can be weak at times, thankfully the guys at Nyko have come out with the Nyko Theater Experience to add much needed power and bass to the bad PSP speakers.

First impressions
You will be shocked when you see the sticker price of this after market product, it is a whopping $79.99! I found this product brand new online at ebay and paid an incredible $10.75. The unit is a lot bigger than I thought it would be, it is a good couple of inches longer than the PSP on both sides. The reason for this is so that the speakers have plenty of room to fit in the case.

The case is made of tough plastic, and brushed aluminum which is great as it protects the somewhat fragile PSP very well. The case is a sleek black that matches the color of the PSP well. On the front of the case you will find the connectors hidden behind two greay tabs. Under the tab on the left hand side you will find two headphone jacks. Why would you need two I hear you ask. Well this is great as it means that you can plug in two sets of headphones, one for you and one for your friend! Great if you are both watching a movie and need to use headphones instead of the built in speakers. Under the other tab you will find the AC connector. The Theater has a built in ion-lithium battery that adds an incredible 7 hours of game play or movie watching to your PSP, which is awesome. The unit will also charge the battery of the PSP while it is connected to the wall outlet. Everything can run off of the same power pack that the PSP uses as well, which is great as this means you do not have to bring the AC adapter if you are traveling.

The interior of the case is very nice. Inside you will find the case covered in form fitting neoprene, this is a great feature. The neoprene is very soft to the touch and this makes the case very easy on the PSP’s easy to scratch screen. Inside the case you will see the mounting bracket that the PSP sits in. On the bracket you will see two connectors. A connector that will plug into the PSP’s headphone jack and one that will plug into the PSP’s AC connector. Simply slide the PSP into the cradle and you're done -- the PSP is connected! The cradle is angled just right so you get the best viewing experience possible. It also has two feet on the back that you need to flip out so the cradle stands up.

How does it sound?
Quite simply, the Theater Experience sounds quite stunning. The 2 stereo speakers are built into the roof of the case. They are about an inch in diameter, but do not let this fool you because the sound that they produce it stunning. Crisp, rich sound will put a big smile on your face, this is how the PSP speakers should have sounded in the first place. If you use your PSP to watch movies you will be stunned at how incredible the speakers handle the sound! There is enough bass and power from these speakers to make any game or movie sound awesome.

While playing games the sound you hear makes a big difference to the overall game play. You can finally hear how the games were meant to sound without having to use headphones. The great thing is that even with the PSP in the cradle, it is still very easy to hold the and play games. And it does not affect game play at all.

However there is one downside to all this greatness. If you are online (using PSP firmware 2.0), or if the you are playing on the local LAN, there is a little interference. Not so much that it will drive you crazy, but it is noticeable, but I personally don’t think this has a negative impact on the unit.

Final Thoughts
The Nyko Theater Experience is anything but a waste of money. Apart from the little bit of static that is experienced while playing online, this is still one of the best products I have ever used, I don’t agree with the $79.99 price tag but if you can find one for cheaper I would definitely say get it. Every PSP owner needs to have one of these. It will take your movie watching and game playing to a new level. Highly recommended!

Everything I've gotten from Nyko fell apart or stopped working under normal use within a week or two.

Yeah, I've had some REALLY bad experiences with Nyko...I don't think I can trust them at this point. I'd consider this if the price weren't so steep.
