Lumines, brought to you by Tetsuya Mizuguchi, producer for Rez, Space Channel 5 and Sega Rally, is a puzzle game to say the least. However, like Rez, it has an interesting aspect, Lumines is also a music game.
Gameplay is comparable to Tetris but instead of clearing lines of blocks to score and progress levels, you clear four by four blocks. Depending on where you place the blocks affects the way the music is played. Dropping a block in the first two columns may add a bass line, dropping another one in the last two columns may add in lyrics and so on...
There are six options in the main menu.
Single Play Mode
Challenge Mode
Similar to Tetris you play until and score as many points as possible, after a song finishes the blocks change and the next song plays.
Single Skin Mode
This mode allows you to play a single song on repeat, the skins are earned by reaching new songs in challenge mode or by defeating opponents in VS CPU Mode. The song is accompanied by a different board look and different style blocks.
Time Attack Mode
There are four options in time attack mode, which are 60, 180, 300 and 600 seconds. The point of time attack mode is to clear as many blocks as possible before the time limit is reached.
VS 2P Mode
This mode allows you to play against another Lumines owner via WiFi.
VS CPU Mode
In this mode you play against the CPU. Each time you clear a block it "attacks" the CPU's board which makes it smaller and makes your side bigger. Each time you beat a new CPU opponent you receive their avatar and a new skin for single skin mode.
Puzzle Mode
In this mode you have a time limit to make a certain shape.

This game is extremely addictive and for the most part the music is terrific. However, to fully appreciate the sound quality I would recommend that Lumines be played while wearing headphones. My ONLY gripe about this game is when you lose in challenge mode or VS CPU mode, you can not continue from where you lost you have to start all over again...
i'll be buying the US release of this game too because my brother loves playing it and i don't want him to overwrite my scores... hehe so i'll see if there's any difference between the two releases
