Summary: Brilliant service with a great selection

GameTart, despite its slightly juvenile and quirky name, is certainly one of the best buying experiences I have had. Whilst they don't necessarily have the marketing money to splash out at big-name partners, they seem to have spent their money where it matters instead, by making me a happy customer. GameTart earned my pound notes when I had decided to give someone else a try after a poor showing from LoveFilm.

As with all these services, you pay a monthly subscription in order to be allowed to take out anything from 1 to several titles at any one time. There is no penalty for late returns, since you can keep them as long as you like, but to hire out more than one title at a time, your subscription goes up in price. If you want to know more about how it works, go here.

GameTart keeps you updated after joining with daily reminders on how to get the best out of the system via email. Each email is short and to the point, and written in a more 'personal' than 'corporate' style.

Pros
If you want to rent movies, go to LoveFilm. GameTart, as the name suggests, focus on games. You can rent PS2 and PSP titles, with XBox 360 and PS3 titles coming soon. They have a great selection on current and future game titles to choose from, including some of the more obscure games that you just wouldn't buy unless you had reams of throwaway cash. Future games can be reserved and will add themselves to your 'playlist' upon release.

Price is not bad in comparison with Blockbuster, Amazon.co.uk, Tesco and other services. I can't comment on US operations like NetFlix. Tariffs range from £9.99 for 1 game at a time, to £14.99 for 2 games at a time, and they have money-saving quarterly tariffs also.

They run varying free trial periods depending on what time of the year it is, but you can usually try it for at least 14 days, but I've seen some at 21 days also.

They inform you via email when they receive your old game and when they're sending out a new one. The service is always prompt and the system they use for sending and retrieving the games couldn't be easier to manage.

They inform you by text when they've sent out a game as well, and they don't charge for these text messages.

Cons
To be honest, not much to report here. The 'On Hold' facility they offer to allow one of your playlist titles to be a higher priority than the others doesn't really work in practice, since they're always sending you out something new in any case.

Overall
All in all, GameTart is a brilliant service and I highly recommend them. I'm giving them a 90 as I think the playlist options could be better by allowing you to assign a priority to all titles, so hopefully they'll read this and see that there's only a little they need to do to improve upon an already great business. Of course, if you want to rent movies, go and see my review of LoveFilm instead.

Too bad for me it's a UK service. Gamefly needs better competition in the US, their east coast turnaround time is horrific, even with the Fast Return service (which is really unreliable since it requires the post office to scan the packages - real hit or miss).
