My first platformer in awhile, and definitely worth a look for all you PSP owners out there in lack of an entertaining game.
It is a basic platformer without anything too tricky thrown in. The Tokobots are basically what gives you the abilities needed to take out enemies and solve puzzles. Sometimes the enemies can be the puzzle since they can be difficult at times. The ability to lose some of your bots momentarily is challenging since you can't utilize attacks without a certain number of them. This means it's not too bad if you let a few fall off a cliff since you can make them respawn just by holding down the are shoulder button long enough. It gets hairy when a boss is knocking them all out and you have no way to attack the boss back.
Let me briefly touch on the basics. Graphics are beautiful, good use of colors and detail. Animations are top notch. The soundtrack is pleasant throughout. Nothing to complain about. Load times are VERY acceptable, not even a couple seconds when switching between rooms.
You obtain upgraded attacks and abilities. For the most part these don't help too much with your enemies. Some special abilities have all the Tokobots join forces like Voltron and you can open up a can of whoopass. Also I should note that these transformation abilities require collected items in order to use. So if you fail at a puzzle enough you might just end up running out of items. Luckily I've yet to be in that predicament. The difficulty begins easy enough but progressively gets harder with bosses and puzzles becoming more brutal and requiring more precision.
Save points are positioned throughout the levels giving you many chances to save without worry of losing hours of gametime. The supporting characters that help develop the storyline are very reminiscent of Dr. Light in the Megaman series. No voices, just a text box with still headshots that do show emotion as you page through the text. Probably the most impressive thing is the button configuration menu. It's not like any other PSP game I've gotten to date, it has the ability to change every action button to any action you want. I want to give props to the developers for this, as I’ve been very frustrated with other games which basically have "sets" of button configs, all of which I usually end up hating equally.
The camera isn't free roaming but rather is focused on where you are standing, with the ability to snap the camera focus by holding the L shoulder button. A free roaming camera would have been nice for some of the puzzles but all in all it's not too bad. Free roaming cameras have their downsides with usually many clipping glitches.
Tokobots will probably give you 7-10 hours of gameplay. But before you start to think it is unfair to pay for a game that won’t give you hours after hours of repetitive boring gameplay, remember that Tokobots costs $30 USD. Most other games are priced at $40 and $50.
To me Tokobots is worth every penny and is a great first try at an original platform action game. I’d very much anticipate a sequel. I’m giving it a 92 due to the fact that there have been a few times when I wanted more control of the camera and some of the bosses have such small “vulnerable” areas that I have died quite few times before I ended up getting the hang of exactly how to take them down. A difficulty level option would be nice for unskilled players.
I concur ... GREAT game and well, well worth the price of admission. I would give it an 80 though ... 92 is pretty strong for any game. Great holiday pick-up though .. would be welcomed addition to any wish list!
I got tokobots for xmas and have played about an hour on it so far. It's a great game, and a good diversion from socom. Graphics and sound are good, controls are easy to get used to, and well, the bots are just freakin cute. It also seems ripe for a tokobots 2, there's a lot they could do to expand with the mechanics.
