The Intec Sound System (ISS) is a simple and inexpensive cradle and speaker system for your PSP. It uses either 3 AA batteries (not included) to power the sound, or you can just use your AC Adaptor. On the front there is a headphone plug, on/off switch, volume buttons and a green indicator light to show that there is power. The unit is incredibly inexpensive at only $30 USD. Unfortunately, in this case you really get what you pay for.
The build quality of the unit is quite poor. The plastic and speakers look sub-par, the volume buttons are stiff and the entire product feels rather cheap. Usually you don't need a manual, but the Sound System folds out in a somewhat bizarre manner, requiring you to actually look at the packaging to figure out how it all folds out. Whether we just got a bad unit or whether they're all like this we're not sure, but when the speakers are on, there is a constant and loud piercing tone, complemented by a little bit of subdued white noise. This is most likely due to an ungrounded connection somewhere. If you move the PSP out of the power plug on the dock, the piercing stops, but then your PSP is tilted.
All of this is too bad, because when you play some music or watch a movie, the sound is actually great, really warm and balanced. There isn't much bass, but you overlook that on account of the warm sound. And while the piercing tone is somewhat masked by the audio we found ourselves with a headache after 2 minutes and had to turn it off. If you listen for it, you can always hear the piercing tone, which we would actually consider a hearing hazard.
If this is an anomaly and all other units don't have a high-pitched tone present at all times, then we'd rate the the Intec Sound System quite well. The looks and quality are easy to overlook when you consider the $30 USD price tag. But it was impossible to overlook the noise we heard from our unit, which was fresh out of the box. If Intec can fix that problem, they'll have a great set of economy speakers with warm sound for those with smaller pockets. Until then, stay away.
Excellent review! I had looked at these and decided against them. $30 is ALOT of money for the small amount of components involved. Thanks for justifying my decision.
Arent they like a target subrand? They are currently selling a neat little rechargeable handset with fan AND speakers thru targets car dept.
