Summary: A Great RPG ride!

Well, I finally put down Infected long enough to play Kingdom of Paradise for an hour or so and will say the game is pretty cool. By far one of the best looking games on the system I might add.

It is a pretty serious action RPG with very heavy Asian influence. You can tell from the wonky translated dialog, which is about 90% spoken, and from the heavy historical stoyline.

This is one of the first game I had to read the manual in order to play. There are different schools of martial arts that you can learn as well as a heavy empahasis on magic. It is kinda cool because you gain skills by finding scrolls all over the map that you assemble into combos. The combat itself is very simplistic and repetitive, although challenging at times.

After building a combo you simply press the circle button the amount of times you have moves programmed into the combo. The magic works by holding down the square button to fill your magic meter than tapping square again to fire it. All the while you are trying to avoid getting hit and having your charge interrupted. whhhhhhew! Sound confusing? Well, it can be! But after you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature and you start feavorishly scouring the map looking for more combo scrolls.

You are confined to a somewhat linear path, although the areas are fairly large to explore. The maps take a little getting used to as well.

After all of this you may be wondering if the learning curve is worth it? Well, I believe it is if you are a fan of action RPG's because this is a really good and deep game. This is a thinking game so it won't replace games like X-Men Legends 2 or Untold Legends. I have only put in a little over an hour so I am only scratching the surface here.

All in all a good RPG for the PSP!

Gameplay: 85 - Deep, pretty decent learning curve that pays off in the end.
Graphics: 92 - Very nice eye candy! Animations are well done and the environments look good.
Sound: 75 - Wonky translated dialog, but the spoken parts add some value!
Replayability: 90 - From what I have read this game takes a minimum of 15 hours to complete and there is a multi-player aspect that allows you to take your guy into an arena to use the skills you have learned against others! NICE!
Total: 85 - Any RPG fan should take a look. All others rent first!

Give the guy a break, like he said he has only played it for an hour. Bravo on the review, I have been waiting for this to come out.

How can I respect his review if its based on one hour of gameplay and reading a manual, I mean half way through the game there could be a plot twist that make the game great or crappy but based on this review nobody would ever know.

No one says you have to respect his review but I respect him for taking time out of his schedule to at least give me more information on the game, and like I said, he did say he has only played it for an hour so take it or leave it.

There is very little virtue in reviewing only an hour of a game unless the game is so abysmal that an hour of game play is all one can stand. This ought to have been posted in the forums, which it was, and a complete review ought to have been written once the game was completed or the game reached a point where playing it was no longer enjoyable.

The problem with this view is that it fails to acknowledge the community of psp411. Using that same mentality I ought to be able to create a bunch of threads about killing babies and anyone who complains ought to just shove off because, provided that I make the subject of my post "baby killing" they ought to have just moved on since they didn't want to read about killing babies.

But that isn't how the site works. It isn't how communities work. If one is going to post a review of a GAME one ought to be posting a substantial review of the GAME, not the experience of an hour of playing the game.

I personally found this review very valuable. RPGs are not like racing games and shoot em ups where you can get the basic gist in a few minutes.
While this rpg is about 15 hours (correct me if I'm wrong) an rpg can easily go 50-100 hours. If we waited till someone did a full walkthrough,
we might never get a review in time to make a purchase decision. I appreciate the fact that he said he completed an hour's worth. It let's me
use that as a weight for the review. I don't think this site should try to compete with the like of IGN,Gamespy...ect who have paid staff that can sit in a cublicle all day and play a game all the way through. I like quick reviews , they help me decide wether to purchase or wait a while till the price comes down. This is supposed to be a fun site in my opinion, not a place for weird arbitrary rules.
Thanks again, mdhegs

Maybe it should just be a post and not a formal review, but I do find this writeup of value. It's really the score of 85 and not his prose that you could say is premature.

Funny, people often post "where's the f'in review" or "anyone got this and how is it?" for games when they've only been released the day or so before... such a contrast. Those type of posts are basically asking for this type of quick review.

Well, I apologize for creating such a stir ... DANG! I posted a mini review of INFECTED and was instructed to post it as a review. Same scenario. I am not one who gets pleasure from posting reviews. I just, as a gamer, like to get good first impressions on games I am considering spending my money on. I am not alone in this I am sure. From now on I will post in the forum section as I have done with other games in the past. I do understand and apologize for posting it as a review after only having played and hour or so. Although I have now played almost 5 hours and havent played anything else since I loaded it. So, in fact, my review and feelings on this game are unchanged. I actually feel thatI would have rated it higher if I would have waited. But, there are people out there who are considering spending their hard earned money and reviews from the main sites are not coming fast enough ... Hence my impressions. Agreed that a FINAL score should not have been posted ... My bad on that one!

I appreciate the positive feedback this mini-review has garnered and feel bad for those out there who would flame me for wanting to let you know my first impressions. I am a casual gamer by nature and a full review on a 15 hour game would take weeks to accomplish. So, go right ahead flamers and play to your hearts content and we will await your FULL review upon your completion.

Tub ... From what I understand it is just Adhoc. Where you take you guy into an arena and battle a friend who has the game too. Nothing special ... There is a download button where you canhook up with the company website an DL stuff. But it is not set up for English yet.

Oh and Thanks!
