Earphones
I was disappointed to see that the earphones white cords were constructed with the same soft rubber material as my Sony MDR-EX71's. Also the cord plug is merely silver plated, not gold plated (you probably don't care). I have not broken these in yet, but I doubt it would make a difference. These earphones are comparable to other earphones in the price range (they're free). Still, being Sonys, they're only slightly better than iPod earphones. That is to say, the sound is unimpressive, however the treble is bright. Like other prepackaged earphones, the bass is faint and the mids are overemphasized. The loudness is slightly above average. The earbud size is a little too big for me; if you have big ears, you'll love it. I prefer the behind-the-neck cords, however, some Americans may be unused to the unequal cord design. The cord length is a little unusual. Because these earphones came bundled with a remote, they reduced the length from standard length (1m), however, they anticipated that PSP owners might not use remote while gaming (because it's useless for gaming), so they did not make it extremely short remote-length (0.5m). The result is that the length is perfect (for gaming)! This is why. The length is about how long it is from your hand of your outstretched arms to your ears (0.75m). If you are gaming, the cord length is not too long or too short. However, if you put the PSP inside your pocket, it is impossible to plug it in without the remote, but if you use the remote, the cord becomes ridiculously long. That's why I prefer the EX71 (other than that it sounds much better) for its 0.5m remote-friendly cord length. The air ducts I suspect are purely for aesthetics.
Remote
This is painted metallic silver, because it is made of plastic. It feels very light ( 'cheap' is what some would say). The design is very simple: there is Forward and Reverse on the top left and right of the circle, Play/Pause on the bottom of the circle, Louder and Softer volume on the right side of the face, and a Hold switch on the side of the remote. This remote is very handy if you're listening to your PSP in your pocket. The remote also doubles its functions for video which is useful if you have your PSP on Hold. Using your remote's controls does not count as using your PSP's controls, so the screen will dim and eventually black out which is good if you want to conserve battery life. However, this might be bad if you are using your remote to give an image slideshow on your PSP. Play starts the slideshow, and Forward and Reverse work as next picture and previous picture. This remote is the only remote that will work with PSP (right now). I do not expect Sony or any other companies to make other remotes for the PSP, so if you want to listen to music, watch videos, or view pictures on your PSP, get yourself a remote to make life easier.
