| Summary: Could have more
70
I've played a lot of hockey and a lot of hockey games but this game is nothing new or special. The game it self has the most normal gameplay you could see in a Hockey game shoot, pass, check and dash but thats about it. You can change your teams strategy with the directional buttons but you really won't notice any shift in the game or in the strategy for that matter. The game has some nice graphics but sometimes you'll notice some weird effects double textures, no boards will sometimes appear in cut scenes and sometimes when a guy enters the box he makes a door closing animation but no door closes.
The sound is actually quite bad the sync on face off stick sounds is way off and the annoucer seems very bored. The game does have some cool unlockables mostly jerseys but you can unlock some of gretzkys teams also.
The game also misses some features that are quite normal in hockey games, make your own player and make your own team this may be to conserve memory but I don't see what is using up so much memory in this game that it can't have these features. The AI is very good tho so you will have a fun time playing agaisnt the computer most hockey games difficulites will usually be to easy or to hard but this game actually got it right where you will have a fair yet challenging game against the computer.
The one big plus about this game is its online mode which is easy to enter and play. Overall this game plays like the old SNES NHLs with updated graphics and a little extra features but besides that its pretty much a NHL 98 for snes.
Graphics: Good
Sound: Fair
Gameplay: Good
AI: Great
I give it a 70 because I like the old snes style NHL games but if you want a EA NHL 2005 or a ESPN NHL 2005 this game is not for you. Or if you don't like gretzky this game is not for you forgot to mention how he has a feature that shows off all his stats but only his stats why?
