| Summary: excellent performance at a resonable price point
98
The Shure E2c noise-cancelling in-ear headphones offer excellent performance at a resonable price point compared to similar headphones. For those who don't know, these headphones are meant to be inserted into the ear canal. The sleeves that it comes with are intended to seal the ear canal opening so the only thing you hear is what's coming out of the headphones.
The Shure E2c headphones exhibit quality all around. All connection joints are reinforced for durability and the 62" cord is well insulated. There are three types of insert sleeves, silicone, rubber, and foam. All of which come in three sizes. Grating stickers are even provided to keep debris out of the openings. When you're not using the headphones, you can store them in the included hardcase.
The driver specs include a Dyanmic Transducer, 105 dB SPL/mW Sensitivity and 16 ohms Impedance.
The headphones come equipped with the silicone sleeves as shown in the picture. I tried them on immediately and found it downright painful to leave in for extended periods of time. I tried the other sizes with similar results. Then I tried the rubber sleeves and found them equally uncomfortable. At this point, my ears were getting sore. Finally, I tried the foam inserts and found them extremely comfortable.
If you've ever used ear plugs, that's what the experience is like. Some may find not being able to hear the outside world disorienting. I've used ear plugs in the past so I got used to it quickly.
I plugged the headphones into my laptop and started up some music. The sound quality was a bit muffled at first but after a few days of use, they have really opened up. The highs, mids, and lows are clear and well defined. The volume level seems lower than on other headphones but I'm now starting to think its actually because I'm not having to turn them up to drown out the outside noise. The headphones may benefit from using a headphone amp.
Plugged into the PSP, the headphones sound excellent and have the added benefit of blocking out the outside noise, a necessity if you take public transportation.

I have earphones that sound spectacular as well. I've never tried the Shures but I've heard a lot of good things about them.
I wonder when we are going to start seeing reviews of headphone amplifiers on this site as well as the good 'phones. I think the E2cs would really benefit from one.

I have a pair of these and they sound wonderful. Plus they come with three different sizes of rubber earpieces, and 3 sizes of foam earpieces to fit all sizes and preferences.
