| Summary: My 15 Minute Review Of Grand Theft Auto On PSP
95
Earlier today I was sitting in a coffee shop in Liberty City. No wait... What I meant to say was that I was in Liberty City in a coffee shop. What I mean is, I was sitting in a coffee shop while playing GTA: Liberty City Stories. And I gotta tell you, it was pretty damn cool. There it was. A GTA game on my PSP.
Check this out. I needed to go get a smog check for my car, but first I swung by my local game shop to snag their last copy of GTA. On the way to the smog center I plugged my PSP into my car stereo and started up the game. The openning song was so badass. I was really getting into it. And then it occurred to me how cool it was that I could play the game as soon as I bought it. No need to go home and sit on the couch first.
I get to the smog place and the guy tells me it's going to take him about 20 minutes, so I head on over to the little cofee shop next door to the garage. I get my coffee and take my PSP out of sleep mode (you gotta love that feature). Next thing I know, I'm in Liberty City. I mean this is really a GTA game on my PSP. It took a few minutes for that to sink in. Next thing I know I'm laughing. There are people looking at me like I'm a little nuts, but I can't help it. There are some really funny parts of this game.
Then I start to actually play the game, and it hits me. The controls are quite wonky. Yes, I said it. Wonky. It's a bit of a shock. GTA: San Andreas controlls like a dream, so in contrast the wonkiness is really noticeable. I can forsee that becoming a problem when the action starts to get real hot. Car chases and shoot outs could become frustratingly hard, due to the wonky controls.
And I also started to notice that the sound was slightly low quality. Not so bad that it would detract from the game, though. It sounded kinda like an MP3 track that was compressed just a little too much. I've never experienced that in a PSP game before, so it was a little distracting.
But I'm not disapointed at all. My complaints with the game, so far, are minor. And the "cool" factor is off the chart for this game. This really is GTA on PSP. It's not some little demo or cheesey port from a previous game. This game has all the stuff you would expect to find in a GTA game: music, voices, acting, people chatting in the streets, cars, cops, taxis, story... I could go on but I want to talk about the graphics and then wrap-up this review.
The graphics are awesome. In some ways, even better than the PS2 versions of previous GTA games. It looks like the character models are made from fewer polygons than the PS2 games but the texture images that cover the models are WAY more detailed. The graphics really are quite amazing.

I want to update what I said about the controlls. That review was written from my first impression of the game. After spending a little more time playing LCS I was easilly able to adjust to the controlls. Though I will say that the controlls are still my biggest and only complaint about the game.
Also, it seems like LCS really takes a toll on the PSP battery. You wont hear me complaining though. I feel that we are incredibly lucky to have such a great game for our beloved little piece of heaven called the PSP. Hopefully GTA: LCS will give the PSP the recognition and attention that it deserves.
