Summary: Gretzky NHL 2005 marks the return of the 989 Sports series

Gretzky NHL 2005 marks the return of the 989 Sports series formerly known as NHL FaceOff. The series was a bestseller for the PlayStation, but not exactly worthy competitor to the killer NHL Series of EASports. This time around, the Great One leads the way in an attempt to set aside the memories of the past..

Unfortunately for Gretz, the gameplay on the PSP is not entirely impressive. Throwback jerseys and unlocking the One as an Oiler are definitely pluses, and is fun for sure, but the graphics leave much to be desired. Goal scoring is rudimentary, take a shot, try and deke the goalie and there ya go. Checking is simple, but often much too simple. Fighting likewise is nothing compared to the epic battles of NHL 04. Pintsized Martin St Louis of Tampa can easily take the Goliath sized Joe Thornton without so much as a sweat. There is no commentary, which isn't really missed. The game features an impressive array of statistics, and players' actual salaries are visible in their profile. But despite all the stats and salaries, none of them have any actual impact on the gameplay. Signing free agents is simply a click of a button. No need for actual monetary amounts or budgets, and in today's capdriven NHL, that is a fatal flaw.

All these limitations aside, Gretzky NHL is the lone competitor in the hockey market on the PSP, and if you desperately want to play some hockey on your portable, go for it. Now how do we convince EA to port NHL '06 to the PSP?
