I got a Pelican Power Brick from my local Best Buy store and it seemed to work fine but got REALLY hot when it charged (so hot I couldn't keep my fingers on one portion of it while it charged). I've experienced hot hardware before and know it's not ideal but I let it go. I just always charged it in front of a desk fan I had handy. I've experienced hot hardware before and know it's not ideal but I let it go. I just always charged it in front of a desk fan I had handy. I got about 4 charges out of it before it became a Pelican Brick. No power. The LED light didn't work, the batteries didn't give me any juice. I wasn't surprised after the heat issue that the thing had died. Maybe it was defective. So the store offered an exchange for a different one. I appreciated their effort since it was more than 30 days since I'd purchased it but had hardly used it. The second one wafted smoke out the tiny vents the very second I plugged it in! Horrible smelling acrid smoke. I immediately unplugged it and had to open all the windows to get the toxic smell out of my dining room. 30 minutes after exchanging my first one, I was back at the store to ask for my money back or a store credit. Seeing that it had been a couple months, they tended toward the store credit (which was fine).
I have an upcoming 10 hour plane trip and want to use my PSP the whole time if the urge strikes me, I wanted an extra battery. I ended up getting a Datel External Battery with Stand for $10 more and it was immediately evident the Datel battery was a step (or two) up in quality even if the Pelican batteries had worked as advertised. The Datel had a charge level check button which would light up to 4 LEDs depending on the amount of remaining charge. The Datel battery got warm (not hot) during charge, and the stand it came with was nice because it gives you the option to attach the external battery to back of the PSP or with the included longer power cable, stash the battery in a backpack or pocket.
In summary, I would NOT feel safe leaving a Pelican Power Brick charging unattended and I'm surprised by the low quality of this item given my previous positive experiences with Pelican products. Two faulty batteries doesn't indicate a fluke to me, it indicates a faulty product design and who knows how bad the smoking battery would've gotten had I left it plugged in.e me any juice. i've heard enough bad things about this product to just stay away from it. i know someone who got one and it didnt even work. granted he got a defective one, but there have been too many defective ones according to a lot of people.
The post was like cut and pasted into itself. Weird. Either way this isnt the first issues with that device I've heard about. I will also stay clear of this (just in case).
I had one, first charge it was quite warm (I could still put my hand on it). After that it hasn't heated up hardly at all, gives me almost 2 full charges. I did notice that there seem to be a LOT of faulty ones out there (maybe 1/4-1/2) but if you get a good one its a great accessory.

also, why does the post repeat itself?"
because this 14 year old doesn't know how to sort a review properly. his thoughts are all over the place, very unorganized :P"
Hey! I'm thirteen, and I write eloquent reviews that are occasionally critical, but get to the point. Also, I write down my ideas and sort them - before showing them off to the point of redundancy on a gaming website.
Nice review despite that. I was actually considering purchasing this for my next plane ride.
Since I switched from the Nyko Charger Case to the Vaja, I was looking for an external power pack. I didn't even entertain the idea of that Pelican Power Brick. I'd heard too many tales about how bad they can be.
I picked up the 3800Mah Power Station from Lik-Sang. I've only had it for a few days so far but on the first charge it barely got warm at all.
I'm surprised that Pelican hasn't at least tried to redesign the thing. I can understand why they wouldn't bother recalling it, but they should make the effort to figure out what the problem is.
Sorry that you are having issues w/ the Pelican Power Brick. Luckily, mine hasn't failed on me-yet. I also have another "back-up"power source if travelling, and its RadioShack's PowerBank. It acts as a charger for 4 nimh "AA batteries..but at the same time, the 'charged' batteries, while in the charger, acts as a powersource- for power voltage from 4.5 to 9v power supply. I originally bought it as a power back up for my POcket PC..but worked well also for the PSP. Interestingly, the PowerBrick worked fine for my POcket Pc also since it requires 5v powerinput. The charger was 14.95 then, plus 4AA nimh (rechargeables--which are not cheap..but seem to last long anyways). Just thought I'd share so you have other options.. There are also other "portable" power sources you can get (check in the Pocket PC forums or websites)... there are a slew of power source that you can choose from and perhaps that wuold best work for your PSP needs..
here's one site you can check out: link
Jesus... I wrote that review and it certainly wasn't copied/pasted into itself when I submitted it. I see no facility for going back to edit it.
For the record, I'm not 14 (my son's closer to 14 than I am) and I do tend to ramble on trying to give as much background and situational info on reviewed items because if I were reading about something I was considering purchasing, I'd rather have MORE info (even if it's not in magazine ready format) than a short "I don't like it, it got hot and broke". Seems some people appreciated the info. As a follow up, the Datel battery is still working fine...
hey i have a queston i just bought my power brick and it burned out in the first 10 minutes i was looking at the brick and it says 3.6 volts i took a look at the psp ac adapter and it says it realeases 5 volts can this be the problem or is the product defeected i dont really know much about this
