There couldn't a simpler concept than shooting games -- hold down the shot button and evade the shots that are fired at you. If this sounds like your type of game, then you'll be happy with Star Soldier.
What's unique about the game is the way you hold the PSP. The game suggests you flip things 90 degrees counter-clockwise, so that your left hand is on the bottom (rather than left) and right hand is on the top. Thus, you have a vertical scrolling shooter. After a minute of trying to get accustomed to controlling the ship with the left hand, I had to switch to regular horizontal mode. You don't have to switch anything in game, you simply rotate the PSP and start playing as if it were a horizontal shooter rather than a vertical. Perhaps it isn't intended to be played this way, because some of the bosses are clearly meant to be facing towards you rather than to the left, but it works much easier than the vertical mode.
The graphics in the game are nothing spectacular, but it's all quite fast and vivid, so you won't have much time to be checking the graphics. Unfortunately, the screen can be a little dark, so you'll have to crank up the brightness and try to play somewhere with little glare. Sound on the other hand is lackluster. It's really generic space music, just what you'd expect from a basically generic shooter with no real story or purpose.
The orientation is unique, but not well thought out. The problem is that maneuvering with the D-pad becomes cumbersome on account of that suddenly the PSP's entire weight is resting on your left hand, while you're trying to move.
There isn't much you can hate about Star Soldier. It isn't trying to be R-Type or 1942. It's a good break from those other games that require some amount of thought or brain power. If you need to just zone out and destroy batallions of spaceships, then Star Soldier should do the trick.

Hmmm... your description and verbage does not match your number rating.
Based on your review... I would think a matching number would be 60 - 75.
I've seen this game and played all of 5 minutes on a display PSP... and, quickly decided NOT to buy it.

Perhaps you're a tougher critic. And maybe you're right, my score was a little rich. I've marked it down a touch after some further play.

"captain"... maybe I am.
I wasn't criticising you personally.
I really appreciate your website.
As for the game... personally... I think it's not worth squat.
I hope their pinball game is better.

I enjoy this game quite a bit. Although it is an older style of game play, I agree with Captians review. It is very fun to play through or just play the quick 2 or 5 minute games. I do not try and play it vertical as it instructs, that just seems too gimmicky to me. But the game is enjoyable, and bashing it after just trying it for 5 minutes is a bit weak.

I think this game need more ships or some thing more too it
