Summary: BEST game on PSP? Not even close...

I think this is going to be the first AVERAGE review of Lumines. Yes, this game is innovative. Yes, it does have some interesting music. Yes, it's fun for the first week. But, when it comes down to it, it's not the BEST game, like everyone is claiming it to be.

Gamespot.com gave this game a 9.0 out of 10. Giving it the highest review of all the release games for the PSP. I don't agree with this. This game is fun, but after playing it for 2 hours, I found myself wondering why everyone says it's so good. The game modes are essentially the same. And the 2 player versus mode gets old REALLY fast.

Challenge mode is by far the most popular. You play the standard game, trying to clear boxes and move onto higher levels. It's nice that the different levels have different music, different colour tiles, and differing speeds, but it's just frustrating having to start on the same first level everytime you lose. Trying to unlock skins in this fashion is a hard task if you just don't have the patience of doing the same first 6 levels over and over again.

Vs. Computer mode is just annoying. The computer AI seems to differ with each attempt. I've been able to defeat the first 4 opponents on one try, then lose to the first guy on another! This mode is just way too difficult.

Another weird thing is that in either VERSUS (computer or player) mode, the tiles you get, in comparison to your opponents, are DIFFERENT!!! How is this fair? Remember Tetris, when you and your opponent get the same blocks, and whoever uses them better/faster wins the match? NO, in Lumines you get different tiles, so whoever gets the more "beneficial" ones, gets an instant advantage!

Puzzle mode is fun, but not very rewarding. You try to build shapes (ie. cross, animals) with the blocks and complete tasks (clear screen, get a certain number of clears) with a time limit. But after a certain point, there are no more new puzzles! Instead they just do a 2x (do two) of everything you did before. Sloppy...

Overall, this game is fun to pick up and play. On the bus, on the plane, on the toilet. And yes, it is addictive... for the first 2 weeks or so. Until you get as far and as high level as you can get. Then the game gets frustrating and boring. The same skins played over and over loses it's appeal in no time...

I wouldn't be surprised if players went to PSP Saves sites to look for higher game saves just to get more skins. Lazy? Yes. But I don't want to have to sit in front of my PSP for 5 hours at a time, trying to get to level 80 just so I can unlock some more skins.

wow, an honest review for once. i like how people all follow suit and say "lumines is the best game ever", just cause they spent money on it. but i bet you more than half of them don't play it anymore, and after only one month. buncha lemmings...

Let's see... there are reviews for Lumines everywhere that give it excellent marks, and yet you say that this one is "honest" because it pans it? I believe the term for a review like this is "outlier" since its going left when everyone is going right. It's almost as bad as the IGN review of Metal Gear Acid (I haven't played MGA, but the IGN review was total fanboy material , i.e. "this game sux because its not metal gear solid 2... and I hate waiting" , in that it attacks the game based on its difficulty.

The game was hard when I first started playing it, but I stuck with it and have improved substantially. I'm still improving at the game, and it still has curveballs to challenge me with. It's a great game to pick up if you want to play anywhere from 3 to 5 hours. I find Wipeout Pure incredibly difficult, I can't get past the Flash class, but I still recognize that its a fantastic game, albeit one that I'm not very good at.

Unique review, yes. "Honest" review... not so sure about that one.

I've got the game and I'd say it's an Excellent game but maybe not the best since I haven't played all of them. I enjoyed Underground as much as I loved Lumines.

Just a correction. The blocks are the same but start at differnt parts of the ROUTATION. Yes, there's a pattern that you'll notice in the set up of the blocks. Both players are given the same patterns but each starts at a different segment of the pattern, making the mode equally fair. :D
