Summary: Burnout: A Legend

With the abundance of PSP racing games out for Sony's little gem, it's difficult for a title to try and distinguish itself from the pack. Well, EA's latest offering does just that, and may very well have taken the crown altogether. Burnout: Legends, the title made famous on consoles has made its way onto the smaller screen and the first word's that come to mind are; FAST, INTENSE, FANTASTIC. This game is the Hotshot's Golf of racing games, and if you've read my review of that game, you'll know that's a huge compliment.

Upon first booting up the game and viewing the intense intro movies your fingers itch to get this baby underway. Yes, there are the usual exhibition races and options settings, but the meat of this baby is in the tournament mode. That's the mode you'll be playing the most. The tournament mode consists of circuits played around the globe. Each tournament also has different classes. Clear the Compact Tournament and you move onto, Muscle, Coupe, Sport and Super. Every race has different unlockable sections and scenarios as well. I'm not done yet. Every tournament has Crash Tournaments as well consisting of different scenarios, so if you think this game is big, it is. 175 Events. 89 Unlockable cars, ranging from, Police Cars, Hot Rods, Fire Trucks, Ferrari Lookalikes, etc. I hope it doesn't sound confusing. It's really quite simple, and the simplicity of this game is what makes it so addcitive.

So you enter your first race and the first thing you notice is, this game is fast. Forget about every other racing game on the PSP, I'm serious. This baby rocks. The graphics, while not as beautiful as Wipeout Pure, are still extremely well done. There's just so much going on. Every car is destructible, and there are tons of effects going on like flash sparks and your car getting mashed up in the process. Did I mention it's intense and fast?

The first race is a standard race, you know, beat the other guys. Then the fun begins. As you race, you acquire nitro through near misses with other cars or actually taking cars out. The X button is gas, the Square button is brake. The Triangle button switches between 2 different views, an on the road view and a behind the car view. This brings me to my first little gripe, I wish there was a few more camera angles; sometimes its hard to see whats coming up, but this is a very minor gripe. Circle button is your horn or Siren (for police cars) and then you have the fabulous are shoulder button. This button slows down time after big crashes and they look oh so damn good. Think of it as bullet time, but for cars, and you get the idea.

Later scenarios actually encourage crashes. Some range from a certain amount of cars you can smash up. Other races have you taking out cars while blazing at insane speeds with Nitros, and weaving through traffic. It does all of this so fluidly and so fast that it just oozes fun and addcition. The crash scenarios get to be so intense that sometimes you'll want to play them over and over just for the fun of it (and also for the beautiful devastation). There are also Trophies you can win along the way, for example; say you're in a crashing scenario and you need to take out a certain amount of rivals for a gold medal, well depending upon how you take them out, you're awarded with trophie takedown. Smash an opponent onto oncoming oil tankers and watch them blow. Grind them into side barriers and watch them spin into the air. Remember, this is all going on while blazing at insane speeds and every takedown is shown in slow motion. Beautiful.

What more can I say, I could go on and on. I can't put this game down, it's that much fun. EA has done a fantastic job. Sometimes a game come's out that's so much fun that you want to keep playing and playing. This is one of them. It's the best racing game on PSP period. It's a pickup and play game. Even if you're short on time you can start this baby up and play a few 5 minute rounds and shut it off. It's a long game that will keep you playing for weeks, with tons of replayability and short load times. Even the music consisting of EA Trax, Rock tunes etc. fits the game perfectly. Do yourself a favour and pick up this baby when it's out, but if your driving to your local store, please buckle up.

stewie, I'm not responsible for the release date, only the review. I can tell you though that it's available today. I only got mine early because of my buddy (manager) who works at EB Games. He let me have it on Saturday. Futureshop here in Toronto, is already sold out on its website. Depending wher you guys are from, sometimes stores sell them a day later or earlier. Hope this clears some confusion.

some places release on the release date while others are shipping on that date. today is the release date so some stores will have it today and some wont. its just how it is. regardless, everyone should be able to buy it sometime within the next day or so so dont worry.

Our store had them a few days ago, it's forseeable that some stores broke the street date.

One thing I wonder though is why is the PSP version is $49.99, and the DS version is slated to cost only $29.99. Are we getting ripped off some way here, or is Burnout Legends for DS just gonna be a chincy knockoff of our PSP version.

I got my pricing information from link
The rest is just speculation. ^^

Ha! Anyone that bought a DS owns a chincy novelty device, it's not capable of much of anything. Go look at the screens on IGN... Also pre-ordered this title, and getting it tomorrow. Can't wait.
