I love hockey. As a Canadian, I'm required to. So when I purchased the PSP value pack and it included Gretzky NHL I was stoked to play me some portable hockey.
The controls are pretty good though it sometimes feels as though the players are lagging behind your movements.
The sound is not very good as there is no play by play commentary, but the crowd noises, rink noises and organ interludes are decent enough to approximate a game of hockey.
The graphics were good, but not great. The characters look good on closeups but from a distance start to get very jagged in appearance. Personally, this doesn't effect my enjoyment, but I know some people care far too much about that sort of thing.
The load times were what I know consider to be pretty close to the PSP standard, so no real complaints there.
The game modes are fairly fun and unlocking Wayne Gretzky is always a bonus, because of the slightly lagging control you may find yourself not enjoying the game at all.
All in all, I would say that if you love hockey and absolutely must have some kind of hockey game for PSP, get this. Otherwise, I'd pass.
