| Summary: Mediocre audio quality, decent price

Arkon's Amplified Companion Speakers are a set of combined speakers that fold together and come with a leather-like bag for storage and transport. They're nice and simple. Even though the audio quality leaves something to be desired, they should be well suited for anyone that needs a pair of inexpensive ($30 USD) and portable speakers.
The unit is capable of taking either a 6V AC adaptor or 3x AAA batteries, and there is a volume dial and power switch and red power LED. Permanently attached is a thin mini-jack cable that plugs into your PSP. The package also comes with a 3' extension cable, which is handy. The attached audio cable can also be wound up and tucked inside.
The speaker unit itself is actually a bit large, especially for the somewhat weak sound that comes out. Bass is almost entirely absent, but highs and mids are clear and full. There was no distortion at audio levels that we tested at. In terms of audio quality, Arkon's speakers compare quite poorly to the Logitech Amp, but you'll also pay half the price. Unlike reviews of other, much more expensive speakers, this unit doesn't have immediately noticeable hum/buzz. However, if you put your ear up close while the volume is on full, you can clearly hear both, but you'll never notice this unless you've got your ear right next to the speakers.
Also, the body is quite large. A much flatter and more compact design would've been better suited to this form factor and price range. The only advantage to this largess is that the speakers feel very sturdy.
Overall, the speakers are average. If you're on a budget and want a clean sounding portable speaker unit, and don't mind weak bass, then this is a good entry point.

it looks like a cellphone with no buttons or a screen.

I think they look like they work.
They apparently do not work...but they sure look like they could!

These are also sold at RadioShack, SKU: 40-1441. They are, I think, appropriately rated, as they produce average quality sound you would expect from a pair of 2 1/4" drivers.
