Summary: Opportunities for improvement but not bad

On first use of X-OOM I too was rather disappointed as we have a large DVD collection that we purchased and wanted an easy process to convert for my PSP so I could watch my movies when I travelled.

The warnings come up that copyrighted movies cannot be copied. If this is where you stop, you will be unhappy, however if you search their site they advise that a particular computer file would be required if you were to copy DVD movies that it is not included in X-OOM.

Google the file and you should find it in about 5 seconds. Once installed, I found I was able to take our DVD collection and convert to a file format that played on my PSP. The more memory I could devote on my memory stick the better the picture quality. Not all movies appear to be copyable. DVD's that we had purchased we were able to copy but an attempt to copy a rented DVD failed, presumably a stronger copyright protection on rentals.

The one thing I would like to see improved on in X-OOM is the time it takes to copy a movie. On average, I'm running about 90 to 120 minutes to create an MPEG-4 movie. If this process could be sped up it would help alot. I have tried a couple of the free programs and have had some issues with them. I haven't tried them all so there could be a good one out there but I thought X-OOM would serve the purposes I was looking for.

Compression speed is dependent on your processor speed, amount of RAM etc. There's not so much the software can do.

Yeah, i havent tried this X-OOM thing yet, but if you want a program that converts videos in to the psp mpeg4 format then you should chek out the program i use, its called 3-GP Converter. it doesnt convert dvd's, however if you have burnt a dvd to your pc than you can stick that right on in there.

I think the assumption is many people would be willing to pay for a piece of software that worked better, or was simpler (it is very hard to batch encode vob files!)
