| Summary: Konami + FPS = ?
75
Are you a shooter fan? Do you have a PSP? Then you’ve been looking forward to this. Coded Arms follows a hacker into his dives into a military trainer gone rouge in an attempt to quell the many beings within with 100% raw bullet-grinding deletion. Boasting a high-variety of weapons, armor and upgrades for each Coded Arms breaks in the PSP shooter genre, but will it leave its wonderful mark or a horrendous scar? Let’s find out.
Controls - Stick ‘n buttons - 95
Yes, you read that right. you control this FPS with buttons. I can hear the fanboys faint, but it works. The areas are small enough that you can aim quite freely and the analog stick, for movement, is hyper-responsive. But, you can change any of this around, which makes it even better. The only way these could have been any better is if I had two analog sticks or a mouse and keyboard. With switch-weapon and reload being on the direction pad you have to stop moving to do either, which is a huge no-no. Konami you tried, and we thank you.
Graphics - A Pixelated Pounding - 50
I expected more. The lack of color was pretty bad, seeing only greys and dark colors made playing outside impossible, but who would? Overall the graphics are pixelated, but the gun reload and switching animations are quite beautiful, everything else -- Bleh!
Audio - BOOM! - 85
One word: Nice. The guns sound amazing, the ambience of the grinding of machines drove me insane and urged me to delete them. The grenade explosions rattled my PSP and scared the crap out of me when I didn’t see them. Something you can be proud of Konami, I thank you.
Game play - The Holy Grail - 85
This is it, so how did Coded Arms play? Unfortunately it’s frustrating! The random level setup is an immense bother and all the other things that have to be done before you complete a level, and some of the later enemies are extremely frustrating to even aim at. All-in-all it was a heavy burden, yet I couldn’t stop my little fingers from playing!
Overall
If you need an FPS now, it works, but if you can wait for Socom or Battlefield then wait.
