Summary: Good game to rent... but not really to buy!

The game resembles the console versions in many ways. Lots of the races, parts and cars are almost exact. The game runs at a little bit of a slow framerate that you will get used to. The menus in the garage are the worst though. The game controls very easily with all cars being automatic. Like the console version, you can fully customize your controls. The only thing I dislike about the controls is having to press up to start a race. As for the races, they're almost all short and good for portable gaming, with the exception of a tournament or two.

Fun Factor - 8.5/10

It is a pretty fun game. If you had fun with the console version of MC3, then you will most certainly have fun with the portable version.

Graphics - 7/10

The graphics are pretty good. They tend to get a little edgy at times, but you don't really pay attention to it alot. The only things that bother me are the blurring and low framerate. But once you race for an hour or so, you get used to it.

Sound Quality - 7.5/10

AAAAAaaah! The sound of the screeching tires when burning out is annoying! It is almost always the same sound too! And can get very repetetive! But other than that, the games sound effects seem OK. The music is great, and I think the same as the console version too. The only downside is that you cannot customize your music playlist!

Replay Value - 5/10

Almost non-existant. The game is fun and all, but in my opinion, neither the console version or the portable version have any replay value after beating the game. The console versions were a little fun to play online, but without the use of headsets, I guess Rockstar didnt feel the need to incorporate an online feature. They could have at least added the ability to download extra content, which would have been a very neat feature indeed!

Overall

After giving it thought, I have come to the conclusion of a 79/100. Yes the game is fun, and can be entertaining for a couple of days. But after beating the game, there isnt much left to do. The framerate and sound issues along with the long loading times make the game an annoyance. You do get somewhat used to these issues, but they still hurt the game in the long-run. I suggest renting this game, and seeing how you like it first.

Sorry I didnt mention the exact time... but after the first few races, every time I wanted to start a race or cruise or something, I just set my PSP down and walked away for a couple minutes... well, not for the races actually...but the cruises and garage and stuff I did...LOL

Thanks for the review!
For a game that was so much waited for by so many... I will NOT be buying or renting it.
If you have to put down your PSP and walk away... that is TOOO long a load time.
The longest load time I have to put up with now is Wipeout Pure and Coded Arms.

It's kind of dissapointing so far, and I've never played any of the console DUB's, but I'll keep playing and post a review soon.
The load times are really bad.

Ooooook, my thoughts on this game have changed since I have had a few hours to play it now. I still will never get over the loading time, the PSP needs a Blu-Ray disc tech. to survive in the future. Anyway, There are alot of nice features in this game, I really enjoy the Hydralics you can get put on the cars. It is difficult to see where to turn in a race, but once you get the "Zone" feature, it becomes less of a problem. I wish the game had a first person view, it would make driving soo much better. The game is worth buying if you have the patients for the loading time. I could kick myself in the ass for trading in my X Box for the PSP......Im really missing it now.

I love how people complain about the load times without thinking about exactly how much is being loaded onto the RAM. Each race has the entire city loaded along with traffic patterns, AI, obstacles like police cars, ambulances, trollies, etc. I don't know where people get this 70-90 second load time from. I've not seen one yet above 60 seconds and once the races start getting harder you'll see load times less and less as you have to restart races or tournaments. I see people complain about the sound who don't know how to change sound profiles on their PSPs or who haven't discovered they can turn effects, music, background noises off completely in the sound menu. Edgy graphics? Low framerate? I haven't seen either of these things really with respect to the fact that this is a handheld. And yes...there IS a first person view. Press start and go to options. I guess I'm just going to have to come out with my own review here soon.

I picked it up ... I agree with howlrunner 100%. Taking a look at what's out for PSP, this is the largest play area thus far available for any title. I would expect this to load a bit slow given how much is loading.
Plus, the frame rate is fine ... the opening cars were slow on purpose. Open some of the later cars, and you'll see some good speed coming from this.
Think of it like this ... there are a few racing games out there already, but this game offers a nice, open ended experience. So far, the current crop of racers (NFS and Wipeout) felt like either "been there and done that" or a trimmed down version of an existing game (NFS is no where near its console version). Not to mention that this game is a HUGE leap for poratable gaming system in my opinion. So if it means 20-30 extra seconds loading, I can handle that. I would hope that over time, developers figure a better way around these loads, but for now, I'll take this with a smile on my face.

I agree with the two above posts. The load times are fine on my end. Its well worth the gameplay. Even the singel races are pretty long.

im gonna give it a shot, but if i play for an hour and only finish about 3 races somethin aint right... i absolutely stunk on the console versions, but had so much fun tuning my car i kept going. i must have restarted each race about 4 times. 50+ seconds x 4 + 2 minutes of racing each time, x the amount of races it takes to get some nice cash = not enough time left to put 28" rims on escalade ext... and that is how i do math...

i think its gonna be fun though. Does anyone here know if when your changing options such as different rims, does it go choppily and slowly? because in NBA street and NFL street it took awhile to change hats and stuff...
